Gov spends time in the “Cowboy State”

July
10

Gov. David Paterson is in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, today to attend a “strategy retreat” of the Alliance for School Choice, which bills itself as the nation’s largest organization promoting school vouchers and scholarship tax-credit programs. The governor’s schedule notes that the event is closed to the media. Paterson campaigned for school choice while in the Senate, but the issue hasn’t come up since he became governor.

Here’s a link to a news release the group issued on March 17, 2008 (the day disgraced Gov. Eliot Spitzer officially resigned and Paterson became governor).  The alliance said that children in New York schools “stand to benefit from the open-minded, reform-oriented views of the state’s new governor” and said he “has built a reputation as an advocate for improving public schools while providing parents with increased educational opportunities.”

Anna Varghese Marcucio, a director of state projects for the alliance, said at the time that the education reform community should expect Paterson (a Democrat) to be “a steadfast advocate for low-income children, but also someone who will work deliberatively and cautiously to not just promote legislation. He is also likely to—over time—continue to expand the base of support for parental choice among a broader segment of Democratic party leaders.”
