Spitzer 2010 Giving Back Money To Contributors

July
10

Disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer is trying to save some face with his former supporters, refunding $1.3 million that contributors gave to his reelection campaign.

But most contributors—and they had to ask for their money back—will only get returned a small portion of what they gave to the Spitzer 2010 re-election fund.

About 900 donors responded to a letter sent by the campaign to Spitzer contributors this spring asking for their money back.

They will get their money back on a pro-rated basis, or about 20 percent of what they contributed, said Jonathan Rosen, a spokesman for the campaign and the state Democratic committee. In total, they will get about $800,000 from the campaign.

The Spitzer camp is only able to give partial refunds to most contributors after angry donors demanded their money back when Spitzer resigned March 17 for apparently soliciting a prostitute in a Washington D.C. hotel.

Before May 1, though, Spitzer’s campaign gave full refunds to about 130 contributors, or a total of $500,000. About 2,500 contributors had given to Spitzer 2010.
