A Spano also rises

July
14

Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano today announced the promotion of Deputy Correction Commissioner Joseph Spano (no relation to the county exec) to the department’s top job. Rocco Pozzi, who had served as both Commissioner of Correction and Commissioner of Probation during the county executive’s tenure, will give up the first job at the start of August.

“Rocco has been doing a fantastic job for the past 10 years, heading up both major departments,’’ said Spano in a statement. “He has been innovative and creative. Now he wants to focus strictly on Probation and the new programs the department is considering to keep Westchester residents safe and protected.”

Joseph Spano, a cousin of former Sen. Nick Spano and Assemblyman Michael Spano, has been a member of the correction department since 1982. He was union president for nine years, before becoming Pozzi’s special assistant in 2005 and his promotion to deputy in 2006.

ADDED: Joseph Spano will join Pozzo in earning the standard commissioner’s salary of  $155, 245 annually. Spano previously earned $127,125 annually.

So, let’s get this straight. One gets a promotion, one reduces his responsibility by 50%. Presumably Spano gets a big raise. Does Pozzi get a big reduction in salary commensurate with having much less responsibility.
Also, since when does an employee decide just what they want to focus on (“he wants to focus strictly on Probation”)? He chose less reesponsibility—he should get less compensation. That’s easy to figure out, but this is Westchester government.
Who’s running the show and who’s getting paid what under the new setup? Just another chapter in the “reward the county government higher-ups and screw the taxpayers”.
    Disgusting.

Could this be one and the same Spano who was listed just recently in the JN as one of the top overtime earners in the County? Commissioners get overtime? Who knew?

No. It wasn’t he who had the overtime. What I remembered reading, upon further research, was that he was listed as second in the County with accrued vacation days (859), Kriss (966).

Sell out your peers, and get a promotion!
