Paterson Rings Bell At NASDAQ; Stocks Open Mixed

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Jul 14, 2008

Gov. David Paterson joined city officials and major-league baseball officials in opening the New York Stock Exchange this morning.

Paterson is hoping for better luck than Senate Democrats did on Friday, when they rang the opening bell at the NASDAQ only to see stocks fall.

The NYSE has the video of the opening bell here.

Of course, who rings the bell has nothing to do with anything, but from AP this morning:

In late morning trading, the Dow rose 48.20, or 0.43 percent, to 11,148.74 after spiking nearly 140 points in the opening minutes of trading and at times falling into negative territory. Broader stock indicators were mixed. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 4.32, or 0.35 percent, to 1,243.81, and the Nasdaq composite index slipped 0.35, or 0.02 percent, to 2,238.73. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 391.3 million shares.
