Trouble For Independence Party In Monroe County

Democrat and Chronicle reporter Jill Terreri is reporting this morning about the recent turmoil in the Monroe County Independence Party.
The party, which has had its share of controversy since forming in the early 1990s, has asked for the resignation of chairman Rafael Colon after reports surfaced that Jack Davis, a Democratic congressional candidate in the 26th District, paid Colon’s wife, Blanca, $5,000 in consulting fees.
While Davis’ camp has defended the payments as “to help build relationships with Independence Party members,” Colon has agreed to sign a statement that bars him from being a member of the Independence Party’s state executive committee—forever.
Colon has resigned his post on the state committee as well. The party has not endorsed Davis.
The flap brings to mind fundraising issues in 2003 with former county Independence Party chairman Don Porto.
At the time, Porto raised $4,100 for “The Chairman Don Porto Club,” mainly through a fundraiser attended by Democrats and Republicans and lent the club $6,500.
Porto then spent the money on his company Porto-ble Systems Inc., which he said he formed to do data processing for the party.
