New kind of ‘retail politics’

August
6

Pollster John Zogby has come up with a new definition of “retail politics:” parsing how people may vote by where they shop.

Barack Obama does the best among Filene’s shoppers, with a 59 percent to 24 percent advantage over John McCain, according to surveys his firm has done. McCain does best among Sears shoppers, with a 46-32 percent advantage.

“In an election like this year’s when the economic health of the nation and tens of millions of individuals is paramount, the new politics of retail helps us find a link between real economic concerns on the ground and how people may vote,’’ Zogby said.
By Zogby’s reckoning, Obama also has an advantage among those who shop at Marshall’s (58-27 percent over McCain), Bloomingdales (55-32), Ttarget (53-36) Nieman Marcus (50-38), Csotco (48-34) and JCPenny’s (43-40.)

Besides Sears, McCain’s domain includes shoppers at Boscov’s (43-39), Kohl’s (44-38) and al-Mart (47-33) .

The Kohl’s irony is supreme. Did Zogby present his findings to the Democrat Senator from Wisconsin?

As for Target, that’s Dayton-Hudson, out of Minneapolis. As you’ll recall, former Vice President (and US Senator, and MN Atty Gen.) Walter Mondale bought all his suits from JC Penney, also a Dayton-Hudson store. Mondale was one of the “loyal” Dems.

How about Brooks Bros, Saks, and Mens Wearhouse? And Ann Taylor.

    I’ll bet they’re McCain supporters.
