Schumer, Jon Stewart and tax breaks for volunteers

August
6

Sen. Chuck Schumer will be on Comedy Central tonight at 11 to hawk the paperback version of his book, “Positively American: Winning Back the Middle-Class Majority One Family at a Time.’’

Schumer’s will appear on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’’—the same program he visited in January 2007 to discuss the hardcover version of the book when it was first published.

Earlier today, New York’s senior senator offered an example of his vision for helping the middle class in a press release announcing bipartisan legislation to increase the tax deduction for volunteers can claim for the use of their vehicles.

The Giving Incentives to Volunteers Everywhere (GIVE) Act of 2008 would increase the mileage deduction from 14 cents to 58.5 cents.

Last month the Internal Revenue Service announced it was increasing the deduction for the unreimbursed business use of a vehicle from 50 cents a mile to 58.5 cents.

But the IRS action did not cover volunteers.

Other sponsors of the Senate legislation are Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada and Democrats Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Chris Dodd of Connecticut.

Schumer on late night tv. Make me vomit. I pity the poor camera operators. And the audience.

Bag Jon Stewart’s show tonight: instead, at 11, watch the rerun of “Oz,” on HBO 304. It’s from the first season, when McManus was clean-shaven.

If taxes breaks are a good idea for some, they should be a good idea for all. Schumer only cares about how often he can be in front of the camera.

I believe I saw a posting on this Blog a few weeks ago stating Bill Gouldman, the republican candidate for the 90th AD in the beginning of July, asking Senators Schumer and Clinton to propose legislation to increase the tax deduction for volunteer first responders can claim for the use of their vehicles. I guess the senators liked Bill’s idea and took it a step further to include all volunteers.

Gouldman is a good guy—in an assembly district reapportioned six years ago to be “Democrat-favorable.”

As for the two other politicians you mentioned—are they leaders? Just asking.

Yesterday, TCM had on “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” Neither of the names other than Gouldman’s comes to mind when watching that great flick.

Schumer and his fellow senator work for us—not vice versa. And of course, neither of them has original ideas

    First class reimbursements

Republican State Assembly candidate Bill Gouldman says America’s first responders should get the same IRS mileage reimbursement as people who drive for business.

Gouldman wants New York’s delegation in Washington to help convince the IRS to change their formula so firefighters and other first responders get the maximum mileage allowance instead of allowing them less per mile as charity givers.

“The best way for us to celebrate America’s Independence is to acknowledge those who sacrifice to keep their fellow citizens safe,” Gouldman wrote in a letter to Democratic Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton and Democratic Congressman John Hall.

Gouldman, a volunteer firefighter from Putnam Valley, is challenging longtime Democratic incumbent Sandy Galef for the 90th Assembly District seat which covers parts of Westchester and Putnam counties.

Keep up the good fight Gouldman
