NJ edges NY for biggest tax burden

August
7

New York has been knocked off its perch as the state with the highest state and local taxes, according to a report released today.

New Jersey taxpayers now bear the heaviest burden – 11.8 cents for every dollar earned, a tenth of a penny higher than the Empire State, according to the Tax Foundation, a non-profit think tank that follows tax issues.

The national average is 9.7 cents. Alaskans pay the least: 6.4 cents, according to the foundation.
