United Way to Paterson: leave poor, disabled alone

Gov. Paterson should reject his “across the board’’ approach to budget cuts because not all New Yorkers can equally stand the shared pain, officials of United Way of New York said in a letter today.
“While ‘sharing the pain’ appeals to everyone’s sense of fair play, the fact is, not all New Yorkers begin at the same starting gate,’’ said the letter, signed by United Way President Susan Hager and two other top officials.
The group wants Paterson to limit cuts to services for the poor, the hungry, pregnant women and young children, low-0income elderly veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Paterson has summoned lawmakers back to the Capitol next Tuesday to consider budget cuts. The only area he has exempted so far is education.
