Hail destroys a third of state apple crop
As much as a third of the state’s apple crop has been destroyed by hail this summer, costing farmers millions of dollars and potentially raising the price for consumers, a state Agriculture and Markets spokeswoman said today.
“We’ve never seen as much damage to crops in recent history from hail as this year,’’ said the spokeswoman, Jessica Chittenden.
The crop last year was worth about $286 million. She said it’s too early to estimate what the value will be this year, or how much prices will rise.
She emphasized that there will still be plenty of apples. New York produces more apples 8Â billion last year than any state except Washington.
