Paterson signs deed measure

August
19

Record-retrieval companies may have more trouble duping consumers who want a certified copy of a deed, under a new state law recently signed by Gov. David Paterson.
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Stephen Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, will require the companies to tell consumers that the documents, which they charge as much as $90 for, are typically available from county clerks for as little as $4.
Saland called the measure â€Å“one more tool to protect consumers.’’
It takes effect on Oct. 3.
