Assembly Republicans Want Tax Cap, But Voted For Circuit Breaker
The Working Families Party says that Senate Republicans should follow the lead of their colleagues in the Assembly: 20 Assembly Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the circuit breaker and millionaires tax.
Some Republicans who have been most vocal on a tax cap supported tying taxes to incomes and taxing millionaires to pay for it, a review of the votes shows. Among those were Assemblyman Greg Ball, R-Patterson, Putnam County, who led a Tax Cap Express to Albany on Tuesday.
Ball said he supported the measure as at least some way to help property taxpayers.
But Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said this week that the millionaires’ tax is the wrong approach.
“They have proposed taxes of over $2.5 billion,” Skelos said of Assembly Democrats. “And if we continue to tax people in New York State, raising taxes, we’re not going to be the Empire State. It’s about job creation, and if you tax people they are going to continue to leave the state.”
Here’s the list of Assembly Republicans, mostly upstate and Long Island representatives, who backed the Assembly measure, which passed 118-24 on Tuesday.

Let the record show that Assemblyman Greg Ball voted yes for a tax increase.
ball should have voted no…and explained his vote in terms
of principles…you don’t inordinately tax the rich,.you
don’t attempt to redistribute income…there aren’t enough
millionaire per year erners to generate sufficient revenues
and all you are doing is forcing them to move…and to
take the jobs they create with them
Now, John Degnan calls the circuit breaker a “tax cut”, and he is Ball’s opponent.
Which is it? Did Ball cut taxes or raise them?
According to John, he cut them.
Kudos to Assemblyman Ball from the Working Families Party for voting for this legislation. Perhaps we should reconsider our endorsement.
In the 99th Assembly district, there are 178 taxpayers who would be affected by this measure because they make more then $1,000,000 per year.
Meanwhile, the other 54,199 residents of the 99th Assembly District receive an average $500 tax cut.
The outmigration of one millionaire versus one hundred working families is a tax wash. Give the relief to the people who need it.
You go Greg Ball!
To answer Re: There are two separate bills that Ball voted on. Degnan said Ball increased taxes when voting for the Millionaire’s tax. The circuit breaker is simply a bill that redistributes taxes based on income. So, in some cases, the circuit breaker will result in a tax increase for some. None of the bills passed will result in any sort of decrease in taxes, so for anyone to say that the actions taken by the Assembly during the special session will result in lower taxes is lying. The actions taken would only attempt to control tax increases, not act in a way to provide any sort of relief. So, Degnan was NOT incorrect in saying that Ball voted to increase taxes.
These are core Republican principles that were first expressed by Abraham Lincoln. They stand as true today as they were in Lincoln’s day.
“You canot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage erner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.” – A. Lincoln
Ball thinks class warfare is the way to go. That is not Republican. Ball thinks pulling down the wage payer (the millionaire’s) is the way to go. That is not Republican. What will Ball’s answer be when the millionaire’s take their wages they pay to others, and leave the state? Where will the tax revenue come from when this entreprenurial class leaves?
That’s hilarious. who would have thunk that Greg Ball WAS A SHELDON SILVER RUBBER STAMP?
The failed little emperor is fading fast.
Greg Ball did exactly what he says all the other Assemblyman do, he followed the lead of Assemblyman Sheldon Silver and he voted to raise taxes. Ball is a fraud.
It appears that BALL HAS JOINED THE ‘MOST DYSFUNCTIONAL GOVERNMENT IN THE COUNTRY,’ as he has called his fellow Assembly members. Guess he decided to join the group to gain a few friends???????????????????
Good point “Somers Republican”, Greg Ball is now a card carrying member of what he calls the “Most Dysfunctional Governmemnt In The Country”. On behalf of Sheldon Silver and the rest of the Assembly Members, I would like to welcome Greg Ball on board.
Greg Ball is all show and no substance. Unfortunately for us in the 99th Assembly District most people have not seen through his Bull as of yet. Hopefully by November he will be exposed.
Hey ROcko..if your so willing to lose one millionaire
how about if all 178 left..and took their businesses
and the jobs they create with them..what then sport!
Roger, consultant. Although we understand you direct a portfolio worth a “King’s Ransom,” surely you’re not, in your arthritic golf years, reaping a taxable mil a year out of it. So, therefore, your opinion is taken as valid philosophy, not self-interest. :)
I’ll drink to that…it has always been my philosophy that
income should not be redistributed period.
How do you feel about Greg voting for it?
