Lest we forget, the Democratic National Convention Committee announced late yesterday that New York’s senior senator will be a speaker next Wednesday night.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, will introduce several Democrats who are hoping to help their party increase its slim majority in the Senate come November.
Political handicappers are predicting Democrats will net a few additional Senate seats, but the party’s chance of reaching a filibuster proof 60-seat majority is considered rather remote.
Schumer will be joined on the stage in Denver’s Pepsi Center with Senate hopefuls Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Tom Udall of New Mexico, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Tom Allen of Maine.
Not surprisingly, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has announced its top priority in the November election is to prevent the election of a 60-seat Democratic majority in the Senate.
Bill Miller, the chamber’s political director, told reporters last week that “the most worrisome issue’’ is possible congressional enactment next year of the Employee Free Choice Act by a Democratic Congress and a Democratic president. The proposed legislation would require employers to recognize new bargaining units if a labor union has obtained signed cards from a majority of workers. Some employers have allowed this so-called “card check’’ process, but most strongly prefer elections administered by the National Labor Relations Board because it allows them more time to campaign against the union.

This looks like it could be one FUN convention. There’s a great set of links for it on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com. It includes links to the official convention site, the host committee’s site, the “protest” site, places to watch it live online and other convention-related sites.
