Report: Clinton not vetted for VP

August

As the Barack Obama veepstakes speculation heats up, at least one media outlet is reporting that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was never even vetted for the post.

“Hillary gets stiffed” is the title on the post on Politico, a Washington-DC based Web site and newspaper. Reporter Mike Allen writes:

Obama has often said, most recently on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on July 27, that Clinton “would be on anybody’s short list.”

But apparently not his.

“She was never vetted,” a Democratic official reported. “She was not asked for a single piece of paper. She and Senator Obama have never had a single conversation about it. How would he know if she’d take it?”

The Associated Press appears to have confirmed that report, and goes back over the short list – which now includes a dark horse from Texas:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The suspense holding, Barack Obama readied an announcement by text message Friday of his vice presidential running mate from a list suddenly spiced by a dark horse from Texas.

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s prospects remained a mystery on a day full of them, although senior aides said the Obama campaign never requested financial or other records from her.

Three days before the party gathers in Denver to nominate Obama for the fall campaign, several officials said Rep. Chet Edwards, whose district includes President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, had made the list of finalists.

Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan Bayh of Indiana were also in the mix, as were Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas — and any unknown others Obama had managed to keep secret despite intense scrutiny.

Many times, with these extensive “lists,” various people are nominally added as a favor to their biographies and obituaries, as in “Congressman Dimwit was, in the early part of the century, seriously considered as a Vice-Presidential candidate for his Party.” It’s like an “Assistant Producer” credit in Hollywood. All hat, no cattle.

That I understand in the early going..but not at this stage

and in this case it wouldn’t be hillary who would need
the vetting it would be bill and the contributors to
    his library….

It will be Michael Dukakis for VP. With all the aggression shown by the Russians, Obomber figures Dukakis can put on that old Army helmet and pose in that tank again.

That Obomber is a creative fellow. This move will immediately enhance his weak foreign policy credentials.

ed: I love your “all hat, no cattle” comment. Lyndon Johnson himself would be proud of your political take.

Now: when was the last time a national party won the presidency with TWO senators both representing states EAST of the Mississippi? Or, with even two CANDIDATES who both were elected officials from east of the great dividing line in our country?

(Note: Nixon doesn’t count in this equation, though in 1968 he was “from New York” as he was credited. RMN was always a Californian, and won elective office there three times. Also, 1988 can’t count. GHWB, although a CT Yankee, was by then a Texan, and had won his only previous elective office there.)
