Paterson: Nothing went wrong

DENVER—New York Gov. David Paterson strongly defended the process use by national Democrats this week to arrive at officially nominating Sen. Barack Obama as their presidential candidate.
“What if the situation happened in reverse?’’ Paterson asked while speaking to New York delegates at a breakfast.
Paterson was referring to the feelings that African-Americans would have had if Obama had lost the nomination to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Half the human race is female and until 88 years ago women in the United States did not have a Constitutional right to vote.
Paterson recalled how state party officials told his father, former New York State Secretary of State Basil Paterson, what an asset to the statewide ticket he was in 1970 as a black candidate. However, “They never even mentioned his name in the paid television campaign ad,’’ he said.
During the 1960s the late Robert F. Kennedy estimated it might take 40 years for the United States to elect an African-American president, Paterson said.
“I know another senator (Clinton) is saying today so I was wrong by four years,’’ he said, adding, “God doesn’t always get there when you want him to, but he’s always on time.’‘
