New state law adds penalties for layoffs without notice

Posted by: Jay Gallagher - Posted in Uncategorized on Sep 02, 2008

Businesses with 50 or more workers who lay people off without giving 90 days notice  can be fined up to $500 a day under a bill signed by Gov. David Paterson, state Labor Commissioner Patricia Smith announced today.

The federal government already has a law requiring notice, but since it carried no penalties it was often ignored,  said Labor Department spokesman Leo Rosales.

“This is to prevent someone showing up for work one day and finding the gates locked,’’ Rosales said.

Quite insightful post. Never believed that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this topic clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up
