Checking it twice…

The state Board of Election is conducting a line- by-line review of challenges to petitions filed by Kieran Michael Lalor, the Republican opponent of U.S. Rep. John Hall, D-Dover Plains.

Lalor, of Peekskill, who is also running on the Conservative line in the Nov. 4 election, said he filed about 6,200 signatures to establish the new Energy Security Now! ballot line.

Philipstown Democratic Committee co-chairpersons Dorothy Gilman and Anthony Merante challenged the petitions for the party Lalor co-founded.

Gilman and Merante say their research shows 5,700 signatures were submitted, instead of the 6,200 Lalor claimed. In addition, they say instead of the 3,500 needed to qualify for the ballot line, only about 1,800 signatures are valid.

State Board of Election spokesman Bob Brehm said he doesn’t know how long it will take to go through all the signatures.

The deadline for certifying the petitions for the general election is Sept. 29.

Lalor, the only candidate for the Energy Security Now! ballot line, said Hall’s campaign attorney, Joshua Erhlich, signed out and reviewed the petitions.

“We want this election to be a referendum on energy policy,” Lalor said. “Hall didn’t object to the other two lines but he knows the energy policy line is powerful.”

Lalor is also the Republican candidate, numnuts.

The challenge isn’t the real story. The real story is that Hall got caught lying, first denying he had anything to do with the challenge, then conceding that his attorney, Erlich, was in on it. The Poughkeepsie Journal at least got the right story.
