Palin misleads on taxes
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin scored numerous political points against her Democratic opponents tonight on the issues of experience and appeal to small town Americans.
But she went overboard when she incorrectly characterized Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s tax plan.
For example, Palin said Obama would increase the “death tax.’’ That’s a reference to the estate tax.
Obama’s plan would freeze the estate tax at the 45 percent rate that’s scheduled to be in effect in 2009 for estates left behind by individuals with more than $3.5 million in assets and couples with more than $7 million. That’s not an increase.
The estate tax is scheduled to be eliminated for one year in 2010, but even Palin’s running mate—John McCain—would not abolish the the estate tax. McCain has proposed a 15 percent rate for individuals with more than $5 million in assets and $10 million for couples.
Getting back to the bigger picture, Obama has pledged to not increase taxes for single Americans earning $200,000 or less and for couples earning $250,000 or less.Palin never got into the details of this topic, choosing instead to mislead listeners that Obama would raise their taxes by billions of dollars.

He will raise taxes right? Letting a tax cut expire so it jumps up to a higher percentage is raising taxes…
Why don’t you talk about this??
Her point was that he has promised billions in new spending. It’s unlikely he can do that without raising everyone’s taxes. Remember Bill Clinton’s promise for a “tax cut” for the middle class? Palin correctly points out that payroll taxes would probably go up.
Nit picking a political speech is absurd. Guess you just wanted to focus on minutia assuming that Obama will do EXACTLY as he says. Neither side would EVER swear to their lives that they will do that. But if you want to make one side look bad and the other good, it makes sense to try to bait and switch readers who didn’t see the speech. It’s about the SPENDING which requires MORE TAXES. She was predicting. NOT taking Obama’s “word” for it. Is that so wrong??? It’s just as fair to question McCain on being able to cut taxes and balance the budget. It’s easy to promise both…but to deliver?? Good luck.
How can you say that Palin’s comment that Obama will raise taxes is misleading? He has said repeatedly, and you repeat his comment, that he will raise taxes on anyone earning over $200,000. If you check the statistics, there are a LOT of taxes paid by people in that income range, and he has pledged to raise those taxes. In addition, Obama has said he’d increase the social security maximum tax base which would impose even more taxes on those with high incomes, while NOT increasing their social security benefits. My father died when I was a sophomore in college, my mother didn’t work. I put myself through the rest of college working after classes during the school year and as a construction worker during the summers. I am now – 40 years later – the founder and owner of a small business, and I am PROUD to say that I earn well over $200,000 a year. Why should I be penalized because I’ve busted my rear end and become successful? Palin told the truth – and just because you don’t like what she said is no excuse to post YOUR misleading and clearly biased comments. Well – it’s your website I guess; you can lie if you want.
Thanks for reporting this.
And to all you believers out there, these are campaign “promises.”
And yes, Palin did lie.
(Shock)!
I’d rather have a 4.5% tax increase over a forty percent devaluation of the dollar.
Our dollars are worth less because of the economic greatness of the last 8 years.
I am an Hillary supporter and besides voting for Obama in November. Palin in her first speech started with a LIE AND THE IMPRESSION IS LIES ALL WAY THROUGH. Why would anyone bother to listen to her anyway? SHE GAVE A MISLEADING SPEECH ON TAXES. She is another McCain talking point to steal female votes. Be assured WE ARE NOT FOOLS TO BE FOOLED BY FOOLS ANY MORE! OBAMA 08 IS OUR CHOICE!
It smacks of desperation and partisanship for a reporter to deride a candidate for “misleading” statements when they are at worst debatable and certainly defensible. You liberal hacks must be quaking in your Birkenstocks with her entry into the race.
You expect objectivity from the Journal News, which is usually as liberal as the Havana Post.
no need for that language
no need for that kind of language
You are correct, sir. Jiminy should not be speaking about Havana in a family newspaper. Were Buddy Holly still around, he no longer would be singing backup.
Buddy Holly from Lubbock. Bye, Bye Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry.
You know, referring back when there were decent newspapers in Westchester, Don McClean was singing about what was then the New Rochelle paper, the Standard Star, in “American Pie.” He was a paper boy on “the day the music died.”
I said “levy” to invoke memories of rye bread. It’s levee.
And the levee isn’t dry today. And there is a sportscaster named Hannah Storm. How about that?

LOVED IT JIMINY-even read your post to my hubby :o) GOPGirl
“The sun is out, the sky is blue; There’s not a cloud to spoil the view, but it’s raining – raining in my heart.”
“Oh, Boy!” Are you gonna do this “Every Day?”
You moved into Buddy’s gentle phase with that one, Ed. Always very good things from Buddy. As a Cricket, I’d know.
Ridiculous chatter!
So sorry, Mr. Rumsfeld. Didn’t mean to disturb your reverie. Rave-On.
The CEO? is that the Chief Envelope Opener?
He must have been dumped by Peggy Sue.
But, “I Guess It Doesn’t Matter Anymore.”
Well said, J. – “It’s So Easy” to succumb to petulance if, with a sharp nose, you’ve been opening envelopes “Every Day.” Despite Rummy’s Captain Bligh routine, some of us who refuse to bow to the sclerotic boredom of bombast from supposed colonels and ceo’s will “Not Fade Away.”
according to this am’s gallop tracking McCain has forged
into the lead by three points 48-45..keep your eye on michigan…if he overtakes Obama there the race is over
Uh, huh. And “yes” on Michigan. And just who were those who doubted Palin’s selection? Never mind that now. All is forgiven. Sarah is making a big difference already.
The latest Dem talking point, said a few times on TV this a.m., including by Donna Brazile, is one for the dark ages. But it blends perfectly with their perception of Obama as the Messiah. Here it is, and this is not a joke.
“Jesus was a community organizer. But Pilate was a governor.”
The Dems are really doing a “Rave On” number. Badly. They sound like raving idiots. Buddy from Lubbock would not approve.
the democrats are panicking..she is a big attraction for
the “anti intellectuals” ie plain folks in the battleground
states..gallop has McCain in the lead tonight for the
first time..my guess is by the end of the week..he
will be up by 8 points
The so-called “elite liberal media” bashing Palin helped fuel this big fire.
For instance, the NY Times, which also published a false, rumor-based Page One story about McCain months ago, now had the gall to put Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy on the front page too. Page One for the pregancy of a girl who is NOT a public figure! The “Us Magazine” cover on Sarah Palin and her family also was an obvious hit job.
And now, Oprah Winfrey, who is very popular with some women and a big Obama supporter, says she won’t interview Sarah Palin until AFTER the election. More backlash. Middle America seems to be rising up.
I agree the Democrats are panicking, and you could be right about McCain being 8 points up by the end of the week.
Unless there is a major gaffe by McCain or Palin, will Obama and Biden win? As Buddy Holly and those other Crickets would put it—“That’ll Be The Day.”
“McCain Pulls Ahead in Gallup
September 07, 2008 9:41 PM
Not the daily tracking poll, the actual Gallup poll, has Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., pulling ahead of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. The numbers among registered voters are 50 percent to 46 percent – and 54 percent to 44 percent among likely voters.” From the ABC News’-Political Punch.
The Democrats’heads must be exploding.
A couple of weeks ago it was suggested to me, on one of these blogs, that I should watch “28 Weeks Later” and that I should equate how the Zombies act to how the democrats act. That description was spot on. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Almost as if confirming the indisputable point about biased liberal media coverage, Keith “Norman Bates” Olbermann and Chris “Tingling Leg” Matthews have been removed as election coverage anchors by MSNBC.
Actually, it was parent NBC which finally decided the two biased loons were hurting the entire network. MSNBC’s ratings are also in the tank.
The two jokers will remain as analysts, but will no longer anchor any of MSNBC’s election coverage. The story is in today’s NY Times, and has now been picked up by others.
Will we see a blog article about this from the Journal News? We should, but that doesn’t mean we will.
Heard Bob Shaeffer (sp?) of CBS on Imus this morning say that McCain-Palin are the first to break 50%. I think I hear some bloggers eating some crow.
On another note, there are Palin supporters out there who are calling themselves Palinistas (okay the liberal media termed them that-but they like it), and Sarah-cuddas. And the rallying theme is “Yes SHE can!”
I can only imagine the democrats scrambling to pick up the pieces of their presidential campaign.
democrats are off stride and off message..they
do not know what to make of the Palin effect (or is it
affect)...at any rate…as soon as michigan is a tie
the election is over…there will be some bradley effect
going on in all of these battleground states
The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator currently shows Obama leading in states with 193 Electoral College votes while McCain leads in states with 183 votes (see Quick Campaign Overview). When leaners are included, it’s Obama 264, McCain 247 (see 50-State Summary).
What GOPGirl wrote is correct, of course. Today’s newest Gallup Poll of LIKELY voters has McCain-Palin up by a full ten points, 54-44.
The Consultant is also right, and there will be a “Bradley Effect” on Obama-Biden too. The Consultant has now become a Sarah supporter, at least in terms of electablility, which is what matters the most.
The Desperate Dems and media will continue their smears, and those smears will continue to backfire.
I would not go by the numbers alone. The mood of the nation seems to be happy with McCain-Palin and I don’t believe that all those who were polled about Obama answered honestly. There are those who would feel obligated to say to a pollster that they were supporting their party’s nominee, and there are those who feel obligated to say that they are supporting their minority nominee-when they have no intention of voting for that candidate. And I hope that Obama’s camp doesn’t realize it.
Sorry, should have used the term Bradley effect
Would have saved time
That’s the Bradely Effect…some being polled won’t admit they will not vote for Obama.
Jiminy,
You might enjoy the blog “We Are Sarah Palin” at “The Actvitiy Pit”
