NEW YORK (AP) — Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama will be the guest speakers at New York’s 63rd annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner on Oct. 16.

Their appearances were announced today by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, which hosts the dinner.

Smith was the first Catholic to be nominated by a major political party to run for president. A Democrat, he served as New York governor from 1919 to 1920 and 1923 to 1928.
