Alaska post card misled voters

Posted by: Gerald McKinstry - Posted in Larchmont, Liz Feld, Mamaroneck, State Senate, Suzi Oppenheimer, Uncategorized on Sep 19, 2008

A fair campaign group said that Republicans state Senate candidate Liz Feld misled the public with a postcard that appeared to be from Democratic state Senator Suzi Oppenheimer but was not.

The Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee yesterday ruled that the Republican State Committee Feld misrepresented and misled the “average voter” by sending a “Greetings From Alaska” postcard that appeared to be from Oppenheimer.

“The Committee found that the fact that the message purported to be from Mrs. Oppenheimer, but was not, was misleading to the average voter,” the decision read. “While the postcard was prepared, paid for and mailed by the Republican State Committee, the candidate is responsible for literature prepared in her name.”

The faux card, mailed in August, showed Oppenheimer relaxing in a chair with a scribble apologizing for missing the vote on a property tax cap proposal, a measure she does not support. It said Oppenheimer was “sightseeing in Alaska.”

Oppenheimer is running against Feld, the Larchmont mayor, for the 37th District. The district includes parts of the Sound Shore as well as Harrison, Scarsdale, White Plains, Ossining, Briarcliff Manor, New Castle and North Castle. Oppenheimer is serving her 11th term.

The committee found no fault in Oppenheimer’s complaint that the postcard did not clearly identify its source. It did, however, rule against Oppenheimer for notiying the press of her intention to file complaints prior to the hearing. That’s a violation of the group’s procedure, the committee found.

If the “average voter” surmised that this card was sent by Oppenheimer, the “average voter” should not be allowed to vote and should be committed to a mental institution on the basis of mental incompetence. Furthermore, that this “fair campaign group” thinks so little of the “average voter’s” intelligence should give all of us pause. And, to conclude, what in hell can be discerned from the last three sentences of this jumbled, ill-punctuated prose?

Why would Suzi want to highlight that she missed the vote??? How dumb is that!

  3. the consultant

Suzi doesn’t get it…an unfair campaign practice would
be if her signature was on the card…it was not
    1. she was in alaska 2. she failed to return 3. she missed
the vote…now everyone knows it and Liz had to pay nada
for the story….and the republican committee name
was right on the postcard..so technically maybe you
could make a case but it pales in comparison to the
point the card was making SUZI WASN’T THERE..PERIOD

The concept of a “Committee” deciding what is “fair” in a political campaign is about as anti-First Amendment as that brainless oaf we have in the White House.

And when you consider that this “Fair Campaign Practices Committee” is comprised entirely of Democrats … the idea that they ruled against a Republican mailer is laughable.

  5. Donkey Darling

You Republicans justify anything that advantages your interests. The word out on the street is that (a) it was a cheap shot; (b) Liz is supposed to get crossover Dems – but not by doing this; she hurt herself© Suzi got a sympathy bounce once people understood it.

When you hate Democrats as much as you do, you justify any attack. But people are fed-up with cheap politics.

She was in Alaska; she failed to return; she missed the vote. What’s the cheap shot – informing the public? The problem is that this kind of honesty is used only during campaigns. At other times, the “gentlemen’s agreement” among sitting legislators is to leave us all in the dark about shenanigans and non-feasances such as this.

ed1 and the consultant are obviously republican tools. No one else believes their own bull as they do.

It ’s also obvious this rigged vote was expressly engineered to embarrass the Senator. A cheap shot, a la Carl Rove. Suzi Oppenheimer’s impersonated signature is on the card. And the vote was called while she was on an already paid, already embarked-on family SUMMER trip to Alaska (legislature not in session). ed1 obviously has the money and temperament to scrap a trip like that for a bogus vote. The full session voted but failed to pass the tax cap the following week (whew! See Proposition 13 if you think caps are a good idea) .

NY State Republicans are shaking in their boots because they are about to lose control after almost a century of mismanagement. Look at Feld’s contributions- right out of the coffers of Skelos and Bruno. So they target a very effective Senator (because she makes smart alliances with Republicans) who will be in a powerful position WHEN the Dems control the Senate. Feld will be a freshmen tool, only keeping the seat warm while she is forced to vote with party bosses (no matter what she says about being a reformer).

and to Jack Roth: I worked for years with the League of Women Voters (who created the Fair Campaign Practices Committee) and they are the most non-partisan good-government group around. They bend over backward to be fair, studying issues and forming a consensus before stating a position.

How dare you make such a claim that they are partisan.

  9. ed1

She couldn’t vote for the cap, was at the same time afraid NOT to do so, and she conveniently pulled a disappearing act, refusing to return. Interesting that only state legislators and teachers can afford the time and money to take off to Alaska for whale watching. The only surprise is that it wasn’t a taxpayer-funded junket for an iceberg conference. Or was it? She and her ilk have delivered New York into fiscal Hades. And I include Joe Bruno and Silver. So much for your Republican “tool” epithet.

  10. Bruce on the Loose

    Hey, kids!

Didn’t Pataki promise you a conservative govt, and delivered – NADA! Didn’t the Senate Republicans promise you a conservative govt, and delivered – NADA! Didn’t Gingrich and DeLay promise you a conservative govt, and delivered -NADA! The Republicaners get in, and take good care of their buddies, having fooled regular people that they’re “on their side”. Hah.

Feld is a tool for the Senate status quo, no matter what she says. And you know it. Suzi wins, is part of a new Democratic Senate majority – and ** PRESTO *** she’ll bring home the bacon.

  11. the consultant's

    for kitz…yes I am a republican..no I am not a tool
suzi has been around too long…and the senate is not
going to do democrat..maybe you are unfamiliar with the
two democratic senators who are going to switch…
and maybe you haven’t considered that one party rule
    of anything is dangerous…

  12. Donkey Darling

Yeah, Suzi’s been there too long,

but it’s OK for the Republicans to maintain
    Caeser Trunzo
    Serf Maltese
    Owen Johnson
    Bill Larkin
    Dale Voelker
    Frank Padavan

in office. All septo- or octo-genarians.

See hypocrisy at its finest! Dump the DEMOCRAT who is “too old” but keep the REPUBLICANS in.

By-the-way, did you protest when Republicans ran both houses of Congress and the White House a couple of years ago?

It’s simple – YOU WANT YOUR PEOPLE IN SO YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT. You want to keep Democrats out, no matter what the rationale.

  13. the consultant's

wrong donkey dearist!...I personally did not like it when
the congress and the executive branch were all one party
I like gridlock in washington..its called a check on
runaway power…same for new york…we have a democratic
governor and comptroller and attorney general..Shelly
silver and the liberal new york oriented democratic assembly
and now you want a democratic state senate as well..you
must not be a property owner or one that has so much
money you could care less about your taxes..with the
markets in turmoil the last thing we need is one party
    governnance..Suzi has to go
