The state Labor Department earlier this month inadvertently sent out the names and Social Security numbers of applicants for unemployment-insurance payments to the wrong people, the department acknowledged today
A department spokesman couldn’t immediately say how many people were affected or what caused the problem.
A follow-up letter mailed to those whose privacy had been violated advised them to contact their credit-card companies and credit agencies to check to see if their numbers had been misused. The department blamed a printing error.
One of those people receiving the letter, Nathaniel Greene, 51, of Rochester, said thatÂÂ one side of an application he got from the Labor Department for unemployment benefits had his name, Social Security number, The other side had theÂÂ same information for someone else.
He said the letter from the Labor Department alerted him that his information, in turn, may have been mailed to someone else on the back side of their forms.
â€Å“This is a big worry for me,’’ said Greene, who works the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. He added that he intended to check with credit agencies to see if anyone was using his Social Security number. â€Å“I don’t have a choice.’’
In the letter to Greene, Karen Bever, the agency’s security-information officer, said the department is â€Å“notifying all individuals who may have received another claimant’s UI (unemployment insurance) information of the criminal consequences for the use or disclosure of information inadvertently disclosed to them…We believe that this will provide a strong deterrent to misuse.’
