Gouldman Ad: “He’ll Shake Up Albany”

October
10

Republican Assembly candidate Bill Gouldman released a new Web ad today that, for once, doesn’t hammer his Democratic opponent, Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and instead says “We can’t wait for Albany politicians to see the light” when it comes to lower property taxes and fixing the state’e economy.

Gouldman’s ad doesn’t mention Galef by name, despite his series of attacks over her previous opposition to a property-tax cap. Only in recent months, Galef, who heads the Assembly Real Property Taxation Committee,  has been supporting a cap.

Interesting Ad. But was the comment “for once” necessary by the person posting the blog?

  2. fred

    Sandy Galef has to go.

  3. Solomon

Well, if she has to go, she has to go. Can’t she find the bathroom on her own?

  4. Solomon

Andy Spano has three detectives to take him to the bathroom. One holds the TP, one holds up the NY Times for him to read while he’s on the bowl, and the third guards the door.

Gouldman has to be kidding us, he is part of the problem, he is a Republican Party Chairman of Putnam Valley. Please Gouldman stop trying to play the outsider role, you are as much an insider as anyone else. You do not bring anything new to the table, you are simply more of the same.

I will stick with Assemblywoman Galef who is always looking out for the best interest of her constituients.

  6. the consultant

leaders of political parties are not insiders as far as
what happens in albany is concerned…the record is pretty
clear that for a northern westchester assemblywoman
sandra views her role as a puppet for the new york city
democratic assembly leader shelly silver..now if your
a teacher thats great..if your a property owner that
    sucks

  7. insider

Consultant. – you speak the truth

  8. SA

We expect nothing but the same from the Republican Consultant. The Consulatant answers to the powers that be in the Republican Party and he will always carry their water. Sandy Galef is one of the most independent Assembly members in the NYS Assembly. She is a Democrat and will vote with her party on most occassions, as she should. Gouldman if he would get elected would vote with his party on issues in the Assembly. In the NYS Assembly, you are either a Democrat or a Republican. Their are no mavericks, they all vote for the most part along party lines. Gouldman would be no different – just more of the same.

  9. lies

once again, the consultant, aka mike edelman, doesn’t know what he’s talking about. both he and gouldman are trying to disingenuously paint galef as a puppet of shelly silver.

ah, but then the facts emerge and the republicans appear to have egg on their faces.

i believe it’s been sandy galef who has been one of the most outspoken members of her conference against the albany machinations, and, if i’m not mistaken, it was galef who was one of the leading forces in the coup against silver in 2000.

galef had enough courage to stand up shelly and she supported michael bragman instead. hey, mr. edelman – how close is syracuse to nyc?

A: about as close as your statement is to reality.

galef is one of the few reformers in albany, it would be a shame to not return her for another term.

  10. smartporpoise

When she bucked Silver (admirably) she lost her perks. When she apologized and got in line (un-admirably) she got them back. This is why there are no Democrat mavericks. There are only Assembly-people who do Silver’s bidding to the detriment of their home constituencies. The first thing they have to do up there is to get rid of Silver and the second thing is to never allow anyone again to amass that much power – power that thwarts independent thought and progress.

  11. SR

I have to admit that Galef did seem to buck the trend and work with Republicans to get some reform and possibly even cut some taxes. Sadly she has been marginalized.

this tax cap issue could ruin her. She polled her constituents and close to 90% wanted it yet she continues to claim only a Circuit breaker is the best way.

this is going to hurt her since she is not representing her voters. Not a good move. there is nothing wrong with a tax cap unless you are trying to keep the door open to radical tax increases. Tax caps help control government spending. Nothing wrong with that at all except it puts a thorn in the side of tax and spend champion Sheldon Silver.

Galef has the opportunity to slam dunk this. But sadly she won’t do what her voters want her to do.

  12. lies

smartporpoise, when did she “fall back in line” ? and what perks could shelly possible give her? remember, she doesn’t accept member items on principle. not accepting earmarks is another admirable position but gouldman has attacked her for that as well.

and sr, galef does support a tax cap, not sure where you get your info from. but she also correctly acknowledges that is not the only solution and it will not lower taxes, precisely what almost every sane economist in new york (including conservatives at the wall street journal) have been saying about this. the new york times labeled it as “an election year gimmick”—i don’t think that’s too far off.

  13. smartporpoise

Not her fault, but when Shelley won, he denied all those who bucked him extra dollars from committees that the legislators count on for additional income. Until they came to him, hat in hand, that was (and is) the policy. It’s reprehensible, but factual. This gives you some idea of the power this one man wields up there. Shelley will allow you to save face at home, satisfy your constituency and vote your conscience if and only if he already has enough votes in his pocket to push through the particular issue he wants. Without that stick insect multi, multi- millionaire pushing people around, she and a few others might be allowed to accomplish a lot more.

  14. Bruce on the Loose

You know, ths argument against Galef isn’t particularly unique…EVERY Republi-clone in EVERY Assembly race is caling EVERY Democrat a Shelly Silver puppet. And when the Democrat can show they HAVEN’T voted with Silver all the time, then it is said, “well Shelly has enuff votes to let them walk” on key votes. So for the Republi-clones, there is only one answer: elect all 7 Republi-clones to the Assembly! Faulkner=Dopey. Pilla=Sleepy. Gouldman=Sneezy. Biagi=Grumpy.

Then, as LBJ once said, you’ll have 7 Republi-clones OUTSIDE the tent p———- in, rather than what you have now: 7 Democrats inside the tent p———- out. Since there is no (nyet, nein, non) chance that the Democrats will lose the Assembly with or without Galef, Paulin, Bradley, Latimer, Pretlow, Spano and Brodsky WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU VOTE THEM OUT?????

It makes sense ONLY if you’re a member of the Republi-clone Party!

  15. Bruce on the Loose

Hurts when I tell the truth, doesnt it!

  16. smartporpoise

I don’t know if it hurts when you tell the truth. Obviously you remain unhurt and unscathed, if angry. How about just good, responsive government rather than all this party BS?

  17. the consultant

bruce my dear fellow..shelly silver is in fact a wholly
owned subsidiary of the trial lawyers and the teachers
union…all of which has and will cost new yorkers
money they can no longer afford…your democrats inside
the tent are voting with shelly so they can stay inside
the tent…that doesn’t mean that they are voting
for controling spending…or for making westchester
taxpayers afford to live here…the democrats are just
as bad as you claim the republicans are they are party
    puppets…with no independent streaks whatever..they
never buck their own leader for the good of their
constituents just like your candidate for president
but it apparently doesn;t matter to you so you
get to pay for it..fine with me

  18. Jiminy Cricket

    One hundred percent true, Consultant.

Silver must have stock in the airlines too. You may have read he’s been billing the taxpayers big bucks because he gets to and from Albany by taking connecting flights through Washington, DC.

Unitl they all get serious about taking on the unions, we can forget about any real budget fixes from Albany.

  20. the consultant

until the democrats recognize that unions are ripping
off the public we will pay and pay..fortunately i no
longer pay property taxes in this state..but the very
idea that uniformed services get to enhance their
pensions with overtime the last three years making
their pensions equal to or greater than their
salaries is nothing less than stealing as is
the mere premise that teachers get health benefits
compliments of the taxpayers until death

  21. Donkey Darling

I’m with Bruce. The Republicans tell us they’re not like Shelly Silver, but George Pataki ran a perfect insider’s game as Governor – a REPUBLICAN – and kowtowed to the unions, and business interests. Joe Bruno, now followed by Dean Skelos, both REPUBLICANS, kiss the same butt you criticize the Dems for. If the Republicans in Albany were serious, Pataki would have line-item vetoed bad spending, and the Senate Republicans upheld his veto. Then where would Silver have been – left out. But the REPUBLICANS were every bit as guilty. How about fessin’ up to that, boys?

Big Insurance, Big Pharamceuticals all felt very comfortable with the Republican Senate. That’s WHO takes over from the unions and trial lawyers if you ever get your hands on the Assembly. The average taxpayer gets zippo.

On to Washington, DC: Gingrich, DeLay et al. let BIG BUSINESS write legislation to suit their needs. Tax breaks for wealthy corporations and individuals, after selling the American public on A Contract with America. Yeah right.

Remember The K Street Project designed to give REPUBLICANS a permanent lock of DC control? That was the REAL contract. And GW Bush was happy to go along with that crowd.

So when Jiminy, The Consultant, and the rest of you REPUBLICANS want to pin it all on the Donkey…there’s PLENTY of Elephant mess to go around. Your base hears your candidates speak of cutting, downsizing, blah, blah, and they get riled at Dems, but your elected Republicans don’t do the things they say they well. Tell me: how many twons and cities run by the “cost-cutting Republicans” have cut taxes? Not many, if any.

But as long as Shelly Silver is walking the halls of Albany, you have a terrific scapegoat to pin it on.

So you blame the Democrats, starting with people like Sandy Galef, who is decent, works hard, cares, and doesn’t deserve your sideline sniping.

  22. insider

Galef voted with sheldon Silver 98% of the time. Is she in line with Sheldon Silver? Of course she is.

  23. smartporpoise

Your irate rantings, Donkey, make me want to take another look at Galef, so you’ve accomplished THAT goal. If her vision and opinion of things jells with yours, there must be more wrong with her than I initially thought.

  24. jane

She is part of the problem. Not part of the solutiob or the future. It is time for a change.

  25. SR

    Lies,

She openly said she supports the Circuit Breaker more and does not want a tax cap bill to hit the floor because she doesn’t think anyone will vote for it. Some support.

And of course a Tax Cap doesn’t lower taxes. I never said that. It has nothing to do with lowering taxes at all. It just caps increases. Thus it will help control school spending as well as local spending etc…

The best solution is a Circuit Breaker with a tax cap. Galef feigns interest in the tax cap but refuses to back it. Why not? What is wrong with capping tax increases at 3% or less?

  26. ed1

    Seconded.

  27. JOE

Sheldon silver has been wasting the tax payer money for years. Where has Sanfy Galef been to point this out. Gouldman pointed out the problem with his traveling habits. Wher was Galef. Sleeping at the wheel.

  28. Middle Road

Facts seem to be lost when dealing with the politics of an election. Shelly Silver is a problem obviously when his own party tries to unseat him. Boss Shelly is a throw back to Boss Tweed. What party was he and has it really changed. So the Dem – Rep thing is not the issue in the 90th. The race is between Sandy and Bill. Get to the issues. How dare Bill Gouldman participate in his community? He dares to solve the problem by participating, when unnamed bloggers can only take cheap shots. By the way I believe you’ll find that the PV GOP took back the Town from a mindless group of self centered egotists by fielding a multi party ticket. Which won by double digit votes. Wouldn’t we want to see this in Albany? Sorry Sandy….its time to move on.

  29. The TRUTH HURTS!

“The PV GOP took back the Town from a mindless group of self centered egotists by fielding a multi-party ticket, which won by double digit votes.”

  30. Middle Road

Wouldn’t we want to see this in Albany? Change?

It can only be achieved by putting in New Assembly Candidates in Office verses the status quo politicians we now have in the Assembly!

  31. GTo

Gouldman is finished and the results have not come in yet.
