Voter registration up 4 percent in state
More than a half million people have registered to vote in New York since march, according to new figures from the state Board of Elections. As of Thursday, 11.9 million New Yorkers were registered, 4 percent higher than on March 1.
The ranks of Democrats and unaffiliated voters both increased 5 percent, statistics show. Democrats’ enrollment rose 306,803 to 5.7 million. There are 2.5 million unaffiliated voters, a jump of 134,764. The number of people who registered as Republicans rose 1 percent to 3 million.
Some minor parties had a significant number of new registrants. There are about 393,000 people enrolled as Independence Party members, a 10 percent jump. There are 1,528 Libertarians in the state, up from 1,175, and 40,203 Working Families Party voters, an increase of 6 percent.
The deadline for new registration was last week. People who are honorably discharged from the military or who have become naturalized citizens since Oct. 10 have until Oct. 24 to register. Change of address forms were due by Wednesday in order to be eligible to vote next month.

enrollment in the independence party may be flawed. i know a few young voters who wanted to be unaffiliated and were registered in the independence party by the board of elections because they said “independent” or mistakenly filled out the form wrong.
that is exactly the problem with the state allowing them
to use the name INDEPENDENCE PARTY…it connotes a non
affiliation status which is absolutely not true…this
party has wreaked havoc on the election system. New York
is one of only five states allowing minor parties to
cross endorse which gives these smaller parties leverage
that they should not have..and now with the republicans
in westchester down by 110,000 to the democrats in order
even to have a chance to win they must cobble together
3 lines..rep consv and ind which essentially emasculates
the ability of the rep party to pick its own candidates
sarah palin in her own words
“We believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in the wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation,” she said.
And I hope they all get called to jury duty and end up on a four month grand jury.
