Well put, Ed. And well said, Ian.

What happened to Joe DiMaggio? Where has he gone? Is he missing? Len mentions Toots Shor, the saloon keeper of all saloon keepers. His place and P.J. Clarke's were the two big Manhattan sports hangouts years ago -- before my time.

But I'd think the Consultant was more the Stork Club type. He probably has about 47 ash trays from the Stork Club and a cigarette holder he borrowed from Sherman Billingsley. :)

This is why Pete Rose's son is not playing third base for the Cincinnati Reds. They gave him a shot for Pete's sake and in order to capitalize on his name, but ultimately he couldn't come close to cutting the mustard, much less his old man's prime rib.

Give me a break. Magazines are in business to make money. Buckley, offered his resignation and the National Review accepted. They were going to lose subscribers if he didn't step down. If Katrina Vanden Heuvel at the Nation Magazine had endorsed Bush in 2004, she would have resigned as well and faced nasty comments on sites such as the Dailykos. The New Republic faced backlash that continues to this day from the Dailykos and other left wing blogs for supporting Lieberman (who was a staunch Democrat at the time) for President in 2004. Only according to detractors should conservatives embrace those who support the Democratic Party. Buckley, decided to endorse Obama. He also supported the Democrats in 2006. He knew that he would face problems if he did so and that's what happened. End of story.

and from Peggy Noonan..the woman who wrote the reagan
material....
In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

I gather this week from conservative publications that those whose thoughts lead them to criticism in this area are to be shunned, and accused of the lowest motives. In one now-famous case, Christopher Buckley was shooed from the great magazine his father invented. In all this, the conservative intelligentsia are doing what they have done for five years. They bitterly attacked those who came to stand against the Bush administration. This was destructive. If they had stood for conservative principle and the full expression of views, instead of attempting to silence those who opposed mere party, their movement, and the party, would be in a better, and healthier, position.

the above says it all

Jiminy,

A double? Yes, a double off the auxilary scoreboard.

My understanding is that Joe D was very puzzled over the line "where did you go Joe DiMaggio?" As Paul Simon tells it - and I think he met DiMaggio at Toots Shor's restaurant - Joe told him "I didn't go anywhere. I'm still here." I never heard about DiMaggio hreatening to sue, but he had a reputation for being kind of a prickly guy.

no problem..actually when I was in high school, with
a black music teachers encouragement I was going to
do "jole" in black face (who knew)..CORE threatened to
picket..so of course I did it without the makeup..
no hard feelings back then on either side...
I was simply trying to imitate the most successful
entertainer of his time...not intending to offend
anyone of course..however as my collegue has mentioned
there are many passive bigots who don't think they
are prejudiced because they believe their positions
due to stereotypes..

Willie, Mickey and the Duke. In my youth, I assumed everything was on the up and up. As the Mick said in an old Edwards and Hanley (brokerage) commercial, "When I came up, I was a head-duckin', foot-shufflin' country boy - but I'm learnin', I'm learnin'."

Ed....Speaking of songs, did you know that Terry Cashman (stage name) of "Talking Baseball" fame also co-wrote "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" for Spanky and Our Gang -- and even before that was a member of The Chevrons, who were out of the Inwood section of northern Manhattan way back when, and who did a nice song called "Lullabye?" Yes, it's on YouTube.

That's just a bit of trivia that came to mind from the Joe DiMaggio references...and it's true what you said about Joe D. initially being angry about the lyrics of "Mrs. Robinson."

Joe threatened to sue when he heard this song. Simon explained to him that it was complimentary and Joe supposedly relented.
