Republicans To Investigate O’Byrne

October
20

Senate Republicans, who were initially silent over the troubles of Gov. Paterson’s top aide Charles O’Byrne, are now saying they will investigate why O’Byrne didn’t report his overdue taxes on his ethics disclosure form.

“We have an important role to play to ensure that public officers at the highest levels of New York government are adhering to the letter of New York’s laws and ethical standards,” said Senate Investigations Committee Chairman George Winner, R-Elmira.

“The best course of action in Mr. O’Byrne’s case, for everyone involved, must be a full public airing and disclosure of the facts. Toward that end, the Senate Investigations Committee is undertaking a review of the questions being raised and the appropriate legislative response.”

Moreover, some Republican senate candidates say O’Byrne should resign.

“At a time when families in western New York are working harder than ever to make ends meet, it’s shocking to learn that the governor’s top aide failed to pay his taxes for five years,” said Republican Senate candidate Michael Ranzenhofer, who is running for a western New York seat.

“This is not only another clear sign that positive change is needed in Albany, but it also seriously undermines the Paterson administration’s credibility when it comes to enforcing New York’s tax laws and addressing the state’s fiscal situation.

“Clearly it’s time for the governor to seek Mr. O’Byrne’s resignation.”

Nobody had anything to say about this one? Maybe everyone thinks it’s just Albany being Albany again all the way around. There could be a court show or a cop show based out of Albany. It would never run out of story ideas.

All phonies up there. If the Republicans in both houses had stayed on target, remembered their reason for being, joined the majority of voters and pushed hard for tax cuts, smaller government, fewer mandates, and property tax relief, they might have had a chance to get a lot of apathetic voters out to the polls. As it is, they remain silent, blame Bush for their own failings, slide into bed with the teachers and other unions, and stalk the occasional weak-sister chump like O’Byrne to make their point.

I was remiss to not add ‘dealing with illegal immigration.’
