Ed1 and Jiminy: here’s a great Alexander Haig moment.

In 1992, Haig had just undergone quadruple-bypass surgery.

He was seen shortly afterward on a boat offshore South Carolina chain-smoking. And laughing.

When Gen. Haig was Secretary of State, from 1981-82, he NEVER smoked in public, although he downed two packs of butts a day. He said to private State Department employees that it would give the wrong impression, if he smoked in public, as Nancy Reagan was cleaning the White House ashtrays every day.

Gen Haig (“I am now in control, here in the White House”) is still alive and kicking.

And God Bless him.

He got us through Watergate.

And I’m having another cigarette.

Jiminy – I read this long ago as true, but sorry I don’t any longer have the direct reference to point to. Haig was a character, no doubt. You probably remember, when the President was shot, he stated that he, personally, had everything under control, conveniently forgetting that he was at best fourth or fifth on the list of succession.

Speaking of Haig, our retired four star general, when he was caught smoking a Havana Roller by an inquisitive reporter, and was asked if he though smoking a Cuban cigar might be thought of as “fraternizing with the enemy,” he replied: “I rather like to think of it as burning the enemy crops to the ground.”

age…but actually you can look up kings ransom and
google it and read the kefauver transcripts…i am so
proud..we provided a service..the people wanted scotch
and they got it….and i have several bottles from
all over the world waiting to be open when my son

Bill would probably enjoy being appointed Ambassador to Great Britain so he can put a little water between himself and Hillary. Reading old Joe Kennedy’s biography might give him a little insight on how to further build up his portfolio. Or, is that job, as rumored, being held for Oprah? If so, maybe Bill could take over Oprah’s show.
