Malcolm Smith Pledges A New Day In January

November
19

Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith, D-Queens, called from Washington D.C. this afternoon as he, Governor Paterson and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, were between meetings with New York’s congressional delegation.

He too said he was embarrassed by the lack of action Tuesday by the state Legislature. But he said they will work better when Democrats take over the Senate in January.

“They treat the minority a little differently,” he said of Senate Republicans. “They did not give us the amount of respect in the house that I will give to the Republican conference in the minority. I will give them that kind of input and opportunity to be involved.”

Smith said the Democratic leaders had already met with Reps. Nita Lowey, Jose Serrano and Charles Rangel. They were meeting later in the day with other Washington leaders, including Sen. Charles Schumer.

The state leaders are pushing for a federal stimulus package to help states, and Smith said they also want to let Washington know that New York will first help themselves out of this crisis.

“I wanted to reassure our congressional delegation that we are going to get our fiscal house in order and that we understand that we have to control spending and cut back on the bloated government that we had,” said Smith (above with Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos at yesterday’s leaders’ meeting.)

Moreover, he said the stimulus package and a bailout of the automobile industry would help upstate New York, which has about 8,500 jobs tied to the automobile sector.

“We couldn’t get it done in Albany yesterday, but we are right back to work today in Washington explaining to them that we will be responsible in January and we need their help,” Smith said. “We can’t cut our way back to prosperity. We’ll have to do things to create jobs.”

  1. change has come

Whem the Democrats take over the senate the working man in NY will be taken care of. We will be a more caring sensitive state.

  2. Jiminy Cricket

A more caring, sensitive state? Oooooo. How touchy-feely is that? The fact is that NY is the state of confusion and delusion. And there won’t be much of a state left unless the unions are finally brought into line—all of them.

And among other things, it also would help if they cracked down on all that Medicaid fraud, too.

  3. G Factor

I would agree with you that medicaid fraud is a problem.
But give me a breake. The Unions built NY. Workers in the United States in general are under paid. Woman in particular are paid less then men are in the same job. We need to get woman in equal par with men.

  4. Senate Joke

Malcolm Smith is an absolute joke, he can’t even get 3 Dems who should be celebrating the fact that they have the majority now to be on his side. New York State politics is a joke by looking at that meeting. Smith reminds me of the kid who comes to class without his homework. Dems better watch out because now you have the majority and your going to be forced to sign this bill which will tick Long Island, NYC, and Westchester off. Don’t be suprised if in 2 years the GOP takes back the Senate because of the Dems signing off on the cuts in health care and education. People like Liz Feld and John Murtaugh will capitalize on this.

  5. smartporpoise

That’s right. We need to get women “in equal par with men.” Bulldoze those red tees!

  6. Jiminy Cricket

Ha. “Fore” heaven’s sake. Good thing you didn’t mention the white tees. Someone would call you a racist.

  7. GOP Girl

    Smart Porpoise and Jiminy,
you better watch out on your comments about “equal pay for equal work” cause the consultant thinks it is okay (I believe, based on previous posts). No one wants to consider previous experience, quality of work, attendance, or ownership in the business.

  8. the consultant

hey guys wait just a darn minute..with my back and hip
I WAS CONSIDERING PLAYING THE RED TEES…Bet I could
    break 80 then!!!

  9. GOPGirl

    Go for it Consultant!

I have no problem with men playing from the Red or women playing from the white. In fact, I have no problem with there being a universal tee position and no handicaps-just play golf and get the score you earned.

cool..then i am sure you don’t mind that I also play
with ladies woods…lighter better control, higher
club head speed for us old cripples…still get
the ball out 225…and I am ALWAYS..in the middle..

Con: It’s those long, long par 4/ s that will be forever your bane. My Uncle who left me no King Ransom, nor even a 7 iron, was once a touring pro with whom I played weekly when he got into his 70s, and it drove him crazy that he could no longer reach the long par 4/s no matter what exotic new driver he tried. A good chipper still, he settled for a lot of 4s but mostly bogeys on those holes with the occasional double thrown in. His two hip transplants didn’t help. In his advancing years, he took long walks each day carrying a golf club which he swore preserved his magical feel. But, like you, I remember not one of his drives all those years which did not find the center of the fairway!

  12. the consultant

you hit the nail on the head ed1..its those long par
    4’s used to hit them with a 5 iron..now I might be
able to make it on a good day with the wind behind
    me with a 3 wood…and speaking of hips…mine is
being repaired in january…what is it with hips
    and golf?

  13. ed1

Left hip turn is the first and most important move in golf. Without it, power is lost, and you have to be talented and strong just to get the ball out over 200 and halfway straight. The backswing really means little, in that you could actually start with the club at its top position, so long as you initiate the swing with that left knee, hip move and get that smooth weight shift. Without that turn, if you’re not very talented, tutored and strong, you never get your weight over to your left side properly. Result: no power, slices and pulls and it’s Sayonara. Golf’s a great sport, though, nonetheless. Can’t be a running back or a power forward when the years start to mount, but you can still tee it up even though you start taking strokes instead of giving them! :) And, if all else is lost, you can always do what ex-presidents do – shoot 105 and claim an 88!

  14. the consultant

exactly…I still score..just not as good as when I was
younger..somehow the course seems to be getting longer
and on the back nine even if I have a great front lets
say40-41…some hole jumps up and bites me in the butt
    for a double bogey..maybe two

  15. GOPGirl

“cool..then i am sure you don’t mind that I also play with ladies woods…”

Nope, don’t mind at all-but you’ve got to wear one of those adorable mini golf skorts :)

You and Tim ought play the Fort McNair golf course in DC – I don’t think there is a long Par 4 on it. Plus it is beautiful-you just need someone in the military to get you on it.

  16. the consultant

taylor made CGB’s…try em ..you will love em..got
my wife the same set..she hits straighter and longer
as President of the LGA she has to keep up with
    the program…..

  17. the consultant

by the way if you are looking for clubs the best way
to get the newer models is to hunt for them on ebay
they cost much less than even at the discount
golf stores and they are in great shape…..

  18. ed1

Golfers looking for courses with short par 4s are like Catholics searching for confessional absolution from easier priests. BTW, Con, if your playing with Miklus, it’s no wonder you lose your concentration on the back nine! :)

  19. the consultant

HA!...very good we have both been members since the late 70’s when malcolm was there…in fact he was the one
proposing me for membership….and in those days
the club was shall we say..”exclusive” however I was
republican and that was good enough for malcolm!!

  20. Steve

On the topic of working the Democrat majority working with the Republican minority, what will happen to the bloated Repubican Senate Councel’s office? Who goes? Who stays?
