Poll: Barack should tap Hill for State Dept. job

If it were up to New Yorkers President-Elect Barack Obama would name Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, and Gov. David Paterson would pick Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to take her place, according to a new poll.
The Marist Poll found 55 percent of New Yorkers who were surveyed want her to be the nation’s top diplomat, while 31 think she should stay in the Senate, where her second term runs until the end of 2012. And almost three-quarters think she would do a good job in that position and just under half think her husband, former President Bill Clinton, would be an asset in the job.
if she leaves, Cuomo is the first pick of 43 percent of those polled to fill her seat, with Congresswomen Nita Lowey of Westchester and Nydia Velasquez of New York City trailing far behind. (Lowey was the front-runner for the Democratic nomination for the Senate in 2000 before Clinton announced her intention to run. Lowey stepped aside.)
Paterson’s job-approval rating dipped a little in this poll, to 51 percent from57 percent a month ago. But he would defeat two potential Republican rivals, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg or former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, if either challenged him for governor, the poll found.
Marist questioned 613 registered voters today. The survey has an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
