Rep. Nita Lowey says she’s looking forward to working with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton after Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state.
“She has the experience and leadership to serve as America’s foremost diplomat,’’ said Lowey in a press statement. “As first lady and as a senator, Hillary Clinton has maintained strong relationships with foreign leaders and earned the respect of people around the world. She has been a thoughtful voice on critical issues including women’s rights, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and international basic education. I am confident she will marshal the international support we need to address terrorism; the impact of the global financial crisis; climate change; and poverty, disease, and oppression in the developing world.’’
As chairwoman of the House Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee, Lowey will work with the Obama administration’s State Department on deciding funding priorities for international programs.
Although the 71-year-old Harrison resident has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Clinton in the Senate, Lowey has indicated a preference for staying in the House because of her seniority there.
The decision on a replacement rests with Gov. David Paterson, who has a large field of eager Democrats to choose from.
