Although he wouldn’t give any details about candidates he is considering, Gov. David Paterson said it is advantageous to have someone from upstate to replace U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton. He did not elaborate.
President-elect Barack Obama nominated Clinton as his secretary of state today. As governor, Paterson has the power to appoint a successor. The person would serve until 2010, when a special election will be held for the seat.
Paterson said the “outstanding” job Clinton did as senator makes it even more difficult for him to choose someone to fill her shoes.
“I thought on a day that she got appointed this would be her day, and that we would really remember this great service that she’s provided and just hope that we can find an individual in the state that can continue to serve at the height and at the level” that Clinton did, he said.
Paterson made the comments on Clinton at a news conference during which he accepted the final recommendations of a state panel on how to reform the state’s property tax system.
