Paterson apologizes for Haiti-aid snafu

December
3

Gov. David Paterson today took the blame for long delays in the delivery of  donated food, water and clothing meant for victims of hurricanes in Haiti.

“This situation has been messed up,’’ Paterson said. “The fault lies with me.’’

He made his remarks in response to a complaint from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who said that many of the donations have yet to have been delivered, more than 10 weeks after the state solicited help for the country, where as many as 1 million people were left homeless by a series of severe storms earlier this fall.

Paterson said the deliveries will now be expedited  to the island.

“The supplies should have been there in two weeks,’’ Paterson said. “We apologize to the people of Haiti. We didn’t come through. We’re going to do so now.’‘
