Senate Democrats, who may lose their chance to control the chamber, are pressing on with a series of budget forums. The second one will be tomorrow in Farmingville, Suffolk County. The purpose of the meetings is to get input and advice on the key budget areas of health, education, higher education and social services.
Another forum is planned for next Friday in Oswego. Gov. David Paterson releases his 2009-10 budget proposal next week. With the state in the middle of a budget crisis, the cuts are expected to be large.
Senate Democrats won a majority last month for the first time since 1965, but a deal to make the current minority leader, Malcolm Smith of Queens, head of the Senate has fallen through. A group of three Democratic senators from New York City were being wooed by Republicans to help keep Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County, in power. Democratic senators had a tentative agreement to bring them back into the fold, but that fell apart. The split is 32 Democrats to 30 Republicans.
