BOy Scouts have their day at the Capitol

One might wonder why the Senate would bother to return to the Capitol a day before
Gov. Paterson is due to present his new budget, when they have to be here anyway. Since the Assembly isn’t here, and all bills that haven’t been adopted die at the end of the year, any action today might be seen as just futile lame-duck gestures. And their presence here for an extra day does come at a cost (for their lodging and food) for taxpayers.
Not so. Besides a raft of appointments to the new Paterson administration that needed to be confirmed, the senators also approved a thick sheaf of resolutions. These official-sounding documents mark events such as 50th anniversaries, 100th birthdays, high-school sports championships and retirements.
Probably the most popular kind of resolution, from a quick perusal of those passed today, was honoring boys for becoming Eagle Scouts.
For example, Sen. James Alesi, R-Perinton, Monroe County, alone sponsored at least 63 such resolutions for promising boys in his district.
