Caroline Kennedy seeking Senate seat

Posted by: Brian Tumulty - Posted in Caroline Kennedy, David Paterson, Hillary Clinton, Nita Lowey on Dec 15, 2008

First she called Gov. David Paterson for some information 12 days ago.

Then she mulled it over for several days.

Now Caroline Kennedy is reported to be actively pursuing New York’s soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat.

According to The New York Times,  “Kennedy has been making calls this morning to alert political figures to her interest.”

The 51-year-old daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy has never held elective office and has shied away from public speaking, but she does have a family name that will help raise the estimated $35 million need to defend the seat in the 2010 election.

The choice, as most New Yorkers already know, is up to the governor.  And Paterson has some time to do his own mulling because the current occupant of the Senate seat, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, won’t resign until after she is confirmed as secretary of state sometime early next year.

Two female members of the state’s congressional delegation—Reps. Nita Lowey of Harrison and Nydia Velazquez of Brooklyn—recently took their names out of consideration.

Two other women—Reps. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Kirsten Gillibrand of Hudson—still are being mentioned as possible appointees.

Gillibrand won re-election last month in the most expensive House race in the nation.  Her Republican-leaning district stretches from part of Dutchess County north to Lake Placid.

Lets be honest with ourselfs why is she being considered.

  2. Logic 101

There is no doubt that she and others have told old dead eye dave that she wants this seat. Why go public with it, except to force his hand? Typical political machinations which will not sit well with Paterson, to be sure. But he may have no choice. The women now think that this is a woman’s seat and plenty of NY pols see her as a guaranteed money magnet.

Are all New Yorkers blind. We pick our elected officials because they fit into a box. Not because they worked there way up the system. Not because they are the most qualified. Not because they are the smartest. But because they make us feel good.

This is one person who says if you want to feel warm and fuzzy. Get a glass of warm milk and cookies and stay infront of a hot fire place. Don’t support people like this to be in an elected position.

Tim, your general sentiments are fine but some of your language is inappropriate.

    Anon: my favorite word.

Don’t you secretly love inappropriate language?

Censorship is the first step towards Nazi Germany, or towards the impotent Saddam’s Iraq.

My great-uncle Will Hays is to blame for a lot of this.

I make up for the family heritage both by trying to be presumptuous and by using inappropriate language.

    Faithfully,

    Tim—

I am not censoring you. I am just making my opinion known. Tim, it is up to you and the administrators of blog to decide what is removed. I find the language you used to be inappropriate but you are perfectfully within your right to post what you want. Given that I am not particularly pc I was surprised that others such as the Consultant, who always tries to be pc, didn’t say something.

the economy is the worst it has been since 1929, madoff
has ripped off his friends and major investors to the
tune of 50 billion….the carmakers are going under
and anon wants to talk about Timmy’s language..if it
is inappropriate the website will pull it..otherwise
I don’t judge others as apparently you like to do
consistantly anon….judge not lest ye be judged
    happy holidays

Funny Consultant but you previously chastised someone on this blog for using Barack Obama’s middle name. I guess consistency is not your forte.

So to take the Consultant’s logic to its logical conclusion, any language or epithet should not be criticized by other posters on this blog because we have a bad economy and there is an administrator? I was not judging Tim. I was telling him that I found his language inappropriate. He used a pejorative ethnic term to describe Suzi Oppenheimer a short while ago on this blog so this appears to be a pattern.

He is entitled to say what he wants and I am entitled to say that I find it inappropriate. You, the Consultant, are perfectfully allowed to condone Tim’s comments but then don’t get upset when someone uses Barack Obama’s middle name. It is a free country but have some consistency and leave the spinning behind for one day.

the two are not the same …the use of hussein is done
to make obama seem foreign un american and “palling
around with terrorists…so my objection was poltical
the use of foul language has nothing to do with
politics..which is what we are supposed to be
discussing…so your criticism is based on your
morality ..mine on my politics..i like to keep my
views on morality to myself…thats why i am
    a moderate secular republican..not a right wing
    religious evangelical nut job

  10. Anon

Well obviously, the administrator of the blog agreed with me. If you are a secular republican, why do you approve of the use of the “f” word to describe gays? I am a straight male but there is no reason to use that word to describe others. That is has nothing to do with morality. It has to do with not using ethnic slurs or homophobic insults to describe others. If I was “right wing religious evangelical nut job” as you seem to be implying why I would be objecting to anti-gay slang?

  11. GOP Girl

Okay, I try to be as clean as possible with my language (former catechist, Scout Leader, ...)but I also at one point worked at a construction company-and lets just say that the language on the job was far saltier than what I’ve seen on this post. The nice thing about this blog is-if you are offended, you can leave or, as I wrote a few nights ago, cover your eyes.

Now consultant, I need to update your vocabulary so you can save sometime typing.

“a right wing religious evangelical nut job” equals “a wingnut”

And to be fair and balanced:

“a left wing looney” equals “a moonbat”

    TTFN

  12. the consultant

    i don’t approve but i don’t condemn..that is for the
administrator of the blog..not my job….and
thank you gop girl ..that makes everything clear

  13. GOP Girl

    You are welcome consultant ;o)
