Health Commish On Obesity Tax

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Dec 29, 2008

New York Health Commissioner Richard Daines, a physician, released a YouTube video about the benefits of taxing soda and other sugary drinks, which is a proposal by Gov. David Paterson as part of his budget.

The idea is unpopular with New Yorkers, yet Daines—aided by a blob of six pounds of fat in the five-minute video—tries to show how Americans and New Yorkers, especially kids, continue to drink too much soda, leading to obesity.

Here is a perfect example of political appointments to supposedly responsible jobs that should remain non-political. I don’t care what Party appointed him. Despite the fact that he can make a case for too much sugar (and salt) in our diets, he’s effectively shilling a tax under the guise of advancing public health. If the governor decided that the State’s future demanded a plethora of new taxpayers, this guy would be telling us about the evils of birth control. If he balked, the governor would appoint a Health Commissioner who went with the program.
