National poll weighs in on Caroline Kennedy

January
6

Gov. David Paterson can add a new national poll to the very long list of suggestions he is getting on who to appoint to the U.S. Senate

A new USA Today/Gallup poll of adults age 18 and over found 45 percent would like to see Paterson appoint Caroline Kennedy to the seat that’s expected to be soon vacated by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Thirty six percent would prefer someone else while 19 percent had no opinion to how the governor should handle this quandry.

There was no indication from the poll whether those surveyed—living in states such as California and Florida—have any idea of who the other possible candidates for the job might be. Gallup did not ask that, nor did the pollsters mention the names of other New Yorkers who are in the running.

For the record, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Rep. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand of Hudson and Rep. Steve Israel of Long Island are among the other candidates most often mentioned.

Paterson still has time to deliberate.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has not yet set a date for its confirmation hearing on Clinton’s nomination to serve as secretary of State.  And Clinton has indicated she won’t resign until she is confirmed by the full Senate.

The Monday telephone survey also found 51 percent of those polled oppose Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s selection of Ronald Burris, a former state attorney general, to fill the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

Why even bother running a national poll when non-New Yorkers would be unfamiliar with the names of the excellent people who should get that appointment instead of Caroline?

And why run a poll like that when this appointment is nobody’s business unless they live in New York? Why should outsiders be allowed to muscle in on the choice of the person who will be New York’s voice in the Senate. That’s why we don’t elect our Senators at large—because they belong to us, and only to us.

What did they think a “national poll” would produce other than a feel-good, JFK, RFK were good- guys result? A waste of time and effort, like the magazine that, hoping to create controversy and increase circulation, ridiculously ranked NY State Colleges above Yale. We truly live in an age of misrepresentation and cynical chicanery in every livelihood, from journalism to politics. We should print on our newspapers, periodicals, and on our currency: Caveat Emptor.

If Mrs. CAROLINE KENNEDY employed her married name of SCHLOSSBERG – would she still achieve the same desultory poll rating of 25% with NYers??? BUT THEN AGAIN WHAT’S IN A NAME??? But then again only the SCHLOSSBERG side of her didn’t vote on all those elections – not the ‘sacred’ KENNEDY side!!! Ha.

  4. Kennedy and speeches

Listen to Caroline speak. Unless she has a well written prepared speech to read and rely on, she is a terrible speaker. Her favorite words are ‘you know.’ She says that over and over again. She needs to take a class on public speaking.
There must be many qualified NYers that could do this job. Why do we need a Kennedy name?
