U.S. Senate hopeful comments on State of the State speech

  U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-Manhattan sent out a news release this afternoon commenting on Gov. David Paterson’s State of the State speech today. Members of Congress don’t usually send out statements on State of the State speeches, but Maloney happens to be one of the people interested in taking U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton’s place. Other contenders include Caroline Kennedy, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Suffolk County, and U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Hudson, Columbia County.
  Maloney commented on Paterson’s call for the federal government to “quickly reform our system of financial regulation,” and she pledged to work toward stabilizing financial markets and restoring confidence as chairwoman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit and vice chairwoman of the House-Senate Joint Economic Committee.
  “The financial services industry is New York State’s second-largest employer next to the health-care industry. The restoration of effective financial regulation is critical to the recovery of our state,” she said in the statement.
  “We in Congress know that New York and indeed all 50 states are reeling in the current fiscal crisis. In the coming days, Congress will be working to pass a new stimulus bill that will invest in the states and their infrastructures, and help ease the pain New York is experiencing,” she said.
  Clinton has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama as secretary of state. She’s expected to get the post. As for who will replace her, that’s up to Paterson, who has been complaining about the endless questions and public pressure to appoint someone. He has said he would not do that until Clinton resigns her seat, but he has been interviewing people interested in the job.
