Reviews On State Of State

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 08, 2009

The reviews are in on Governor Paterson’s address and they are not too good.

Bill Hammond of the Daily News said the speech “was a lot like that sugary soda he wants to tax – too much fizzy sweet stuff and practically zero nutritional value.”

Fred Dicker of the Post wrote “Paterson squandered an opportunity to confront New York’s fiscal problems yesterday in a rambling, thin and cliché-ridden State of the State Address that failed to recognize that the crisis represents a rare opportunity for sweeping change.”

The New York Times said Paterson offered “worthy goals,” while Gannett’s Jay Gallagher said observers found it “like watching a movie backwards, when you already knew how it was going to turn out.”

The Albany Times-Union said, “With both that warning and that hope, the governor set the right tone for the year ahead.”

The Democrat and Chronicle said, “But talk isn’t enough. Paterson must demonstrate the new brand of bipartisan leadership that he talked about to ensure that upstate gets the attention it needs.”

You can watch the speech here.

I agree with all those who thought this was a lousy speech. Paterson is a glib guy who should try comedy. But he is otherwise an empty suit who is long on liberal rhetoric but very short on pragmatic action.

Sad to say – In way over his head, as are the Senate and Assembly. None of them has a clue to governing other than how to barter influence for money and power in both their personal and “professional” lives. They are all now so blatant in their methods that it is no longer worth discussing. Each of us now has to figure it out for ourselves and make our own decisions accordingly.
