Caroline Kennedy’s Approval Dropping: Q Poll
Caroline Kennedy’s poor rollout of her candidacy for U.S. Senate has hurt her popularity with voters, putting her behind Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as New Yorkers’ preferred candidate to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Quinnipiac Poll today found.
By a margin of 31 percent to 24 percent, voters prefer Cuomo to Kennedy, the poll found, a drop off of nine percentage points for Kennedy from a similar poll just three weeks ago. Moreover, 48 percent of voters didn’t think she is qualified to hold the position, compared to 37 percent who do.
Her favorability rating among New Yorkers also dipped: from 46 percent to 39 percent since Dec. 23.
“Caroline Kennedy’s stumbling start in her first interviews may have cost her the lead,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Still, by a margin of 38 percent to 33 percent, voters believe Gov. David Paterson will appoint the daughter of late President John F. Kennedy to the seat.
