Included in the packet Family Planning Advocates (the legislative arm of Planned Parenthood in New York) handed out at its legislative lobby day in Albany this week was an orange flier titled “SECURITY GUIDELINES.” It provided advice to help everyone stay safe “and keep our proprietary information secure.”

The reproductive rights group is pushing for legislation this year that would establish a grant program for schools and community-based groups to teach “medically accurate” sex education, and another bill that would update the state’s abortion laws. Both have significant opposition from people and groups that believe non-abstinence-only sex education encourages promiscuity (which Family Planning Advocates says studies dispute) and that changes to the state’s abortion laws, such as eliminating any reference to abortion in the state’s penal code, are unnecessary and dangerous.

Participants in the lobby day were advised to safeguard their conference materials, namely by not leaving them unattended in public areas. Family Planning Advocates provided a “shred box” in the registration area for disposal of unwanted materials. They were told to be discreet about conversations in public areas like hallways and elevators. And if they became aware of any activity by people who oppose abortion, they were to alert a Family Planning Advocates staff member.

“Opposition supporters often attempt to overhear private conversations and engage unsuspecting participants in discussions to gather information. Be vigilant! Anything you would not want to appear in a public arena, do not say out loud. Also, be aware of who is asking you questions, etc.,” the flier said.
