Senate Search Update

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 16, 2009

After saying earlier in the week that he could name Hillary Clinton’s Senate successor before the presidential inauguration, Governor Paterson today is back to planning on announcing it after the inauguration, which is Tuesday.

He said on WFAN this morning that, “I would have probably have done it this weekend, but I just kind of decided I didn’t want to trample on Sen. Clinton’s ability to come back and say farewell to her constituents nor the state of the state, I mean, the inauguration. So right after the inauguration I expect to be getting to this.”

Later, during a Manhattan press conference, he said he’s having some “new thinking” on who he may support for the position, saying he intends to have some follow-up conversations with some of the candidates.

So apparently he’s narrowed the field, but an announcement is not imminent.

And he suggested that Clinton may be doing a farewell tour across New York, but her aides have declined to say whether anything is planned.

“I would have probably have done it… “I just kind of decided…”nor the state of the state…”I mean…” Any wonder that NY is in the jumbled state it is in?

This is what is called a ‘bail out” the governor is
setting himself up to get out of appointing a person
who is becomming less and less the choice of the democratic
party as each day goes by….He really should appoint
andy cuomo from a political point of view..its gets him
totally out of the way for 2010 and gets him on the governors ticket…should he not do that there is no
reason that andrew could not explore a primary run..
particularly if patterson’s numbers keep falling…remember
patterson was not elected..and the personal stuff that
came out right after spitzer resigned will come out
again only this time in more lurid detail….patterson
essentially got a pass in light of the fact that spitzer
was humiliated..but that might not be the case in the next
election and certainly not if the cuomo machine is doing
    its opposition research properly

Andrew is either following through on Spitzer’s initiative or rejuvenating the suit against banks for what he allegedly calls a history of charging higher interest rates to “minorities” (however he describes that word) in certain “red-lined” areas. Seems a very odd and inappropriate time to pile on the failing banks. The argument over whether or not the NY AG has jurisdiction in this matter is going to the Supreme Court because he refuses to back down. Seems our muddled “leadership” pushed and continues to push the banks to loan money to those who have an actuarial listing of questionable repayment …and then persecute them for making bad loans… whatever. Admittedly, all sides have to admit a share of responsibility for the mess we’re in, but Cuomo has more than a little of Spitzer’s bulldozer arrogance in his personality. Like his father, he enjoys discussing Spinoza and St. John of the Cross during an emergency meeting called to discuss fiscal disintegration and methods of remedy.

  4. Senator Pick

Paterson said on a news report this morning, January 19 that he needed to pick a new Senator that “would win re-election in 2010.”
Does he want a win more than a qualified person????? Since Paterson plans on running in 2010, guess he needs support.

NY needs a really qualified NYer that will push for the good of NY.

yes he needs a win…no point in picking a looser
for two reasons..you can imagine the drag on him as
a gubenatorial candidate if while he is campaigning
the person he chooses for senate is tanking…lots
of heat possible for his judgment in that case..so he
    needs a winner…also a qualified person..that may be
his way of letting caroline kennedy down easily…
she has no communication skills whatsoever…she
has no governmental experience of any kind..she
is simply the daughter of an assasinated president
now I admit there is something to be said for emotional
picks..and of course we have examples all over the nation
of nepotistic runs for office…the Udalls, Boe Biden,
Hillary Clinton, Jeb and George W. and other Kennedy
cousins. but in most cases the relative had elective
office experience before running for the senate
or the congress…caroline has none and in fact has
been in a cocoon for over 40 years.. I think her selection
will make it impossible for Patterson to win….I think
even democrats are aware of her weaknesses and would
prefer andy cuomo…or any other candidate with congressional credential like carolyn maloney..however
we should know by wednesday..I am betting against Kennedy
but not a big bet because I believe patterson knows that
the family can either be your very good friend or a
    very potent enemy
