Spano deputy going to Albany

Posted by: Gerald McKinstry - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 22, 2009

Larry Schwartz is leaving the number two job in Westchester County government to take a high-level position with Gov. David Paterson, The Journal News has learned.

Schwartz, a long-time deputy to County Executive Andy Spano who was involved in most aspects of county government as well as Spano’s campaigns, will be first deputy secretary to the governor.

He’ll report to the governor and  Secretary to the Governor William Cunningham III.

Spano’s chief adviser, Susan Tolchin, will take on the deputy role.

The change is effective Feb. 2.

Schwartz’ departure comes as Spano is gearing up for another election bid in November.

There goes Andy’s brain! He’s done. He must be stepping down this year.

Spano can’t run without him. Who’s next? Leaving a sinking ship.

Apparently someone using the same moniker. Andy is not done. If you have a D after your name and you are an incumbent in Westchester than barring a scandal you will be re-elected.

Larry would never leave if Spano was viable. He IS Andy Spano. Spano can’t function without him.

It is clear that Spano is not running. Larry loved his job and loved being the King of Westchester. He would only leave under one circumstance – Andy Spano is not running for re-election. Get ready for a big battle on Dem side for the next candidate. It will be a multi-candidate primary. This should be fun. This also hurts GOP. It was easier to run against a flawed incumbent like Andy Spano.

    Which Democrats will run?

Rob Astorino is planning to run for County Executive and Andy Spano is afraid he’ll lose to him. Astorino came close last time and with all the problems with Spano and Westchester, he’ll probably win this time. Looks like Spano is starting to pack it up. He doesn’t want to go down a loser.

well you all really have it wrong…Larry made a career decision that moves him from the county level to the state
a big difference if that is the business you are in…
it has nothing to do with andy’s chances..although I do
think Astorino can beat him this year…good luck to
larry…and we will really miss the articles in the guardian
    singing his praises..

Larry possesses two important traits that I respect, he is extremely loyal to his boss and he is 100% committed to his job. Governor Paterson will be thrilled to have Larry working for him, Larry is a no nonsense individual who will implement procedures in the NYS government that will save money and make the state more responsive to the needs of the residents of NYS.

Andy Spano was very lucky to have Larry serve as his deputy, I wish Larry all the best.

Sue Tolchin will now serve as Andy Spano’s Deputy County Executive and I am sure she will do a great job. Those of you who know Susan know she is also a dedicated and loyal person and she will serve the people of Westchester County and Andy Spano in a dignified manner.

Those of you who think Andy Spano is not going to run for re-election are mistaken. Andy Spano has stated for the record that he is seeking re-election.
