Hispanic lawmaker organizing Gillibrand opponents

State Assemblyman Peter Rivera wants to steal the spotlight from Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand’s swearing in ceremony as New York’s newest senator.

An hour before the 12:30 p.m. ceremony today in Washington, Rivera will hold a meeting in Albany of Hispanic state lawmakers who will discuss a Democratic primary challenge to Gillibrand in September 2010.

In a press release, Rivera said the group plans to meet with Gillibrand’s potential challengers. His release says “Gillibrand’s pandering to xenophobes has made her persona non-grata in communities across the state.’‘

Brian, did Mr. Rivera explain just how the people were xenophobes? He should look into his own community, he may be surprised or is it he turns a blind eye when it comes to the pot calling the kettle black?

  2. Outside of NYC

Gillibrand is the only state office holder who lives and has a connection outside of New York City. Who is representing the people from outside of the 5 boroughs of New York City.

These guys want another NYC person.

That’s funny. Hilary wasn’t from New York. I still dont know why people elected her and what she actually did for us. I am also sure that all the Hilary lovers will trounce on this now. ;-)

A fact the media chooses to ignore is the diversity and yes the fact that immigrants, plenty of undocumented workers are the backbone of the agribusiness industry located in her House district. My experience as a volunteer of two Board of Directors, clearly illustrated the reality of the Tri-City Congressional region Gillibrand represented. That region remains heavily populatied by immigrants, so her vote for the Save Act was not political practicality at work, but a symbol of her dislike of foreigners.

20th Congressional district needs to assist immigrant workers with the myriad of health disparities most are facing. Mrs Gillibrand’s “rich farming experience and support of agribusiness” has been at the sake of all the undocumented workers toiling seven days per week without any type of respite, no sick days, no overtime pay, no workman’s comp insurance and no health care, some may be state issues but she did not lift a finger to help. However Gillibrand worked at federal level to support a neo-slavery styled, indentured servitude guest worker program.

Rep. Gillibrand’s cultural hostility toward Latinos goes beyond the domain of immigration. Her effort to eliminate the use of languages other than English in the realms of health care, education and essential civic matters like VOTING goes way beyond the discourse of legal v. illegal immigration. A blue dog extremist Gillibrand supported the controversial SAVE Act that attempted to militarized the border. She worked to cut Federal aid for cities like New York which have policies protecting the confidentiality of immigration status seeking help from city agencies. Her positions visibly put her in the radical minority of Democrats in Congress.

  5. Semantics

On the other hand, she’s probably absolutely correct. Unlike too many in our society, from Wall Street to Main Street, she understands the meaning of “illegal.”

rivera should get over it and…..what was organized and when was just another example of stupidity

How soon will Kirsten Gillibrand become the senator from New York? What process(es) do(es) Mrs. Gillibrand have to go through with the state and Senate if any, and how soon will she be confirmed?

  8. the consultant

she doesn’t have to be confirmed…patterson picked her and that is enough…as the article states she was sworn in
and is now the junior senator from new york…However
she will face a primary not only from a Latino candidate
but from Steve Israel as well…Gillibrand is not a good
fit with the democratic primary voter who is more liberal
than the state as a whole…and gillibrands close
association with the NRA over the years makes her
unpalatable to many down staters…In addition she is
connected to al d’amato who is pretty much despised by
most voters, but particularly by democratic primary voters
Finally she was selected by a governor whose numbers
are dropping like a rock so her popularity within the
democratic party will suffer as well. Bottom line is that there will absolutely be a primary and it may involve more than two people. In a three way primary lets say with
carolyn mccarthy from long island, kristen gillibrand
and steve israel ..look for israel to be the winner
