Murphy Under Fire For Unpaid Taxes

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Feb 02, 2009

The National Republican Congressional Committee is taking aim at newly picked Democratic candidate Scott Murphy in the 20th Congressional race, saying he owes $21,550 in back taxes and penalties in 1997 and 1998 for a company he owned, Small World Software, Inc.

The committee also says that Murphy, who is challenging Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco for the open seat, has recently changed his biography online. It used to say, “prior to joining Advantage Capital, Mr. Murphy founded three different Internet-related businesses…” one of which was “Baazee.com, the leading online auction site in India that was sold to eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY).”

They said it now states: “Prior to joining Advantage Capital, Mr. Murphy founded two different Internet-related businesses…”

“It may be easy for a Wall Street venture capitalist like Scott Murphy to think he is above paying taxes, but middle-class families don’t have that luxury. Our financial crisis has taught us that corporate CEOs should be held accountable for their actions, and Scott Murphy should be treated no different,” said NRCCspokesman Paul Lindsay.

“Given the limited time he has to introduce himself to voters in upstate New York, it’s time for Murphy to come clean and disclose all of his questionable business dealings.”

Murphy’s campaign couldn’t be reached for comment.

The congressional seat is open after Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to the Senate. The district runs from Dutchess County to the North Country.

Apparently there are a lot of democrats that don’t pay
taxes…dachle, geithner, and now Murphy…but they
want us to pay our taxes…that way when they spend
the money they know its not theirs but ours they are spending..and while we are on the subject the stimulus
bill proposed is not a stimulus bill..it does not
give the economy the quick boost it needs to restore
growth…I am all for a stimulus package..In fact I am
not necessarily in favor of what the national republicans
keep calling for ie tax cuts..because there is no
guarantee that people will spend the money they
get…after the financial meltdown they are just as
likely to either pay off debt or save it…
we need to address the housing issue and I have my
own view of how to do it; SEE BELOW COMMENTS WELCOME

everyone says that the housing issue
is at the core of the problem…However other
than bankruptcy relief the bill doesn’t
    deal with housing and there
are several issues within that issue.

    1. people who are about to lose their homes
    2. reluctant buyers
    3. how to stimulate the economy through housing relief

1.for people about to lose their homes..the government
should reform their mortgages at 2.99% interest
only for 30 years…based on the original purchase
price if the home increases in value when it is
sold the government gets 25% of the profit…
ie the government can recoup the lost opportunity cost
of lending the money at market rates

    2. for reluctant buyers….government loans
money at 3.5 SELF LIQUIDATING…with same
caveat..that when sold IF there is a profit
    government recoups a portion..say 15%
buyers income would have to be adequate
to cover monthly cost at 35% of NET INCOME
    NOT GROSS MONTHLY INCOME…
downpayment of 20% required as well…plus
credit score of 650 or better
ie only those who can afford a house get to buy one
    on these terms

    3. finally for those of us who have been good
    mortgage payers….no late payments good
    good credit…we get 3.5% as well…and we
can cash out at 80% LTV if it exists..
    these current viable homeowners owe
    the government nothing..so they either
    reduce their monthly mortgage payment
by 40% giving them more discretionary
income to spend in the economy ie
    a continuing stimulus over time
or they can cash out..but they don’t
get cash..they get credits for big ticket
    items..tv’s computers, appliances
    college tuition, etc…..so that acts
    as AN IMMEDIATE STIMULOUS

now the cost of the above may be fairly
high..but if the economy recovers, and
housing values go back up the government
gets a good share of the money back..

and at the same time the housing crisis
    abates,

of course there would be a 2 years sunset
provision on these terms ..so that there
would be an incentive to refi now, buy
now and of course continue to live in your
    present home…

First he doesn’t pay his taxes, then he lies about his family. Not ready for prime time.

  3. I figured out

why Democrats favor higher taxes. It doesn’t affect them, they just don’t pay them.

  4. Ben Linus

Tax cheats are a dime a dozen in the Democrat party.

Hello. My understanding is these were tax liens on Mr. Murphy’s business/es. It should be noted that the tax liens were apparently put in place AFTER he sold the related businesses. Therefore, if this information from the Murphy campaign is correct, the GOP information that he “didn’t pay his taxes” is out to lunch. The GOP again makes themselves out to be just a bunch of mudslingers so far as I can see. They lack substance and solutions and valid ideas for the future of our country. Electing one seems…well, out to lunch. Thank You.

AND YOUR “EXCUSE” FOR TOM DACHLE NOT PAYING 140,000
IN TAXES ON SERVICES GIVEN TO HIM IS WHAT ?

  7. the consultant

AND BY THE WAY JUST BECAUSE A LIEN IS PUT ON YOUR
BUSINESS AFTER YOU HAVE DISPOSED OF IT..DOES NOT
MEAN IT IS NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SATISFY
THE LIEN…UNLESS THE BUYER OF THE BUSINESS HAS
EXPRESSLY AGREED TO INDEMNIFY YOU ..WHICH IN
THIS CASE APPEARS NOT TO THE CASE

“AND BY THE WAY JUST BECAUSE A LIEN IS PUT ON YOUR
BUSINESS AFTER YOU HAVE DISPOSED OF IT..DOES NOT
MEAN IT IS NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SATISFY
    THE LIEN”

You are an expert at this kind of information, I assume?

If you no longer own a business, and a tax lein is put in place when somebody else owns said business, you are just blowing smoke. Excuse me, your partisan is showing.

The Consultant is correct. Free legal advice doesn’t come around often. Store it away for future reference.

I have had tax clients lose their homes, small business, personal property conficated by the IRS using tax liens for much less than this. Their only real problem is that they were not registered Democrats.
