Nassau County workers may take pay cut
With troubling times ahead and a need to control labor costs, Nassau County workers may take a pay cut, Long Island’s Newsday is reporting.
County Executive Thomas Suozzi and unions say they could reach an agreement by the end of the week. It’s a move that would avert layoffs.
Westchester County workers won’t likely have to deal with those challenges. Deputy County Executive Susan Tolchin, in a conversation last week about County Executive Andrew Spano’s campaign, said Westchester is well-positioned to weather this economic storm. She has said the county will reduce its work force through attrition, not layoffs.
What do you think — Is Westchester doing the right thing? How could the county reduce its labor costs?Should county workers take a pay cut? Should they contribute to their health insurance plans?
(Intelligent, well thought out ideas only please).

in an economic downturn..where property taxes are the
highest in the nation..and the state is planning to
raise income taxes on those making in excess of
250,000 a year, in order to make westchester a place
that retains its attractiveness, spano should do the
same thing that suozzi is doing…its the right thing
to do because if one level of government is going to
raise taxes the other ought to attempt to cut them
by renegotiating the very genereous but out of sink
contracts they have with the municipal unions…
Tom Suozzi understands the seriousness of the crisis
and is taking appropriate action..Andy Spano has the
entire ninthfloor devoted to his public relations
operation…he has drivers and body guards around
the clock, and most people would agree that the county
is bloated with unnecessary spending…not only should
he trim that back…but he should get fair wage concessions
from the unions.and all municipalities should stop
the practice of allowing union members to double and
triple their salaries in preparation for retirment
in order to boost their pensions…the recent audit
committee in new york said the practice was abusive
and that overtime should not be part of the pension
computation past a certain point….the working families
party talks about taxing millionaires but it apparently
has no problem with union members making 70,000 a year
for their whole career retiring on the equivalent of
saving 1.5 million dollars at 5%
The Working Families Party is, very simply, a conglomeration of municipal and school unions wearing an artificial populist beard.
and because new york state election law allows it
they form a separate political party….and engage
in the business of wheeling and dealing for their
designation….you just saw what happen to a certain
judge who was selected by the IND party…which then
pursuaded the republican party in need of their cross endorsement to nominate him as well…the system
as it is presently constituted stinks from the head down
