DiNapoli bets $30 million of pension-fund money on N. Ireland

Posted by: Jay Gallagher - Posted in Uncategorized on Mar 16, 2009

Despite recent signs that unrest might be on the rise in Northern Ireland,  Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced that the state pension fund he controls plans to invest $30 million there.

“There are opportunities in Northern Ireland, and I intend to take advantage of those opportunities,’’ DiNapoli said.

DiNapoli’s decision “is a massive vote of confidence  in the peace process by Comptroller DiNapoli,’’ said Northern Ireland First Deputy Minister Maetin McGuinness.

After a long period of quiet in violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, two soldiers and a police officer were killed last week.  Police were pelted with rocks and gasolione bombs over the weekend after they arrested three men in connection with the deaths of the soldiers.

Interesting to note that, historically, there have been more murders in “peaceful” NY City alone in ONE year that in all of Ireland during the compiled decades of “war.”
