Paterson: “We’ll Be Sorry” If State Raises Taxes On Wealthy

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Mar 16, 2009

Gov. David Paterson today warned against lawmakers potentially moving closer to increasing income taxes on the wealthy, saying “I think we’ll be very sorry if we implement that kind of a tax at this time.”

Speaking today after opening a new South Ferry Station in lower Manhattan, Paterson reiterated that he doesn’t support raising income taxes on the wealthy. But as he’s done for months, he wouldn’t rule out the possibility. He also said he opposes raising sales tax, another proposal on the table.

He said the state faces another $30 to $35 billion budget deficit in the following two years after they close the current $14 billion gap. Raising income taxes now would take that option off the table in future years, he said.

“I think we are going to find that the floor of our recession is even greater than we thought it was,” he said, adding that “If we would implement a tax on the wealthy now, what we do about the deficits in those two years.”

Paterson also implored lawmakers to agree on a bailout of the MTA, a deal in which he has been unable to broker.

“The legislature has got to come forward and got to come forward now,” the Democratic governor said.

It is time to TAX THE RICH From George Soros to Al Sharpton, and all the “RICH” in between.

taxing the rich is not a solution to anything..all
it does is make new york a less desireable place for
the “rich” to live…and then those who are not rich
ie the union members can pick up the tab and when they
find that they have chased the “rich” out of the state
then they will finally understand that the “rich” not
only pay their fair share..they pay by far the lions
share of all taxes paid..and since services to those
who are not “rich” will have to continue..guess who
is going to have their taxes go up….that’s right
everyone who is left holding the bag and of course
when taxes go up ….everyone becomes less rich…

That’s because campaign contributions will drop. Do the right thing and totally overhaul the taxing structure of NY so property taxes are not killing the homeowners.

Was a time you needed to be a landowner to vote. Now, along with the Pelosi, Rangel et al. lunatic fringe, every homeless lunatic also has a vote, and all in unison; they outnumber voters who actually work for a living, and they vote to raise your income, property and school taxes into the stratosphere.

In addition, despite STAR , (which the braintrust in NY is considering eliminating, or severely cutting back!), I know personally of many seniors, some of them widows and widowers, who live basically on social security and the income from some paltry 2% or less taxable CDs who are being literally driven out of their modest, long held homes by state, property, and school taxes.
