Some Assembly Democrats Rejected Budget
The business group Unshackle Upstate today thanked the six Assembly Democrats who voted against
against the state budget, saying it’s “an attempt to protect upstate business and citizen taxpayers.”
Buffalo-area Assemblymen Dennis Gabryszak, Robin Schimminger, Sam Hoyt and Bill Parment of Jamestown voted against the budget, along with Rochester-area Assemblymen Joseph Morelle and David Koon and Joan Christenson of Syracuse.
“We reinforce our call for the Upstate Senate Democratic Caucus to follow their peers, protect their constituents, and vote no on the proposed budget,” said the group’s executive director Brian Sampson.
Additionally, a number of suburban and upstate Democratic Assembly members voted against portions of the budget. Most Westchester County Assembly members, for example, voted against pieces of the budget.
For example, Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, D-Scarsdale, said she voted in favor of only three budget bills, including ones that dealt with the Rockefeller drug laws and the bottle bill.
“We need to scale back and we spent too much money,” Paulin said. “I’m worried about the economy of the future.”

Budget bill passed Senate:
AB 155 Budget Bill TRANSPORTATION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION BUDGET.
3-31-09 Passed Senate (Vote Y: 32/N: 30) – Party Lines
As is his habit, Silver, when he has a sizable majority on an issue, lets certain underlings who might face embarrassment in their home district, vote contrarian. But, they had better bow and plead their case personally to him before any vote or they become white bread for his toaster.
Here’s ed1’s position:
If a DEMOCRAT voted FOR the budget – BLAME THE DEMOCRATS
If a DEMOCRAT voted NO on the budget, he was obviously let off the hook – BLAME THE DEMOCRATS
So, in sum, BLAME the DEMOCRATS
Forget that REPUBLICANS in the Senate just put on the most hypocritical display of crocodile tears after 40 years of doing the same and worse. Forget that REPUBLICANS ran the Goivernoship for 12 years and produced similar budgets.
Phooey – ya sit at the computer and dish out yer baloney all day long. But it’s still partisan baloney. The State has been screwed up by a comibination of both parties over the last 20 years. They’re BOTH to blame.
it seems to me that the republicans have never controlled
the assembly..and Sheldon SIlver is now controlling both
the governor and the State Senate..its a lesson learned
the democrats are responsible for the tax the wealthy
policy not the republicans..it is a working families party
idea foisted on shelly silver because he is in fact
an old bronx socialist at heart…and now he is firmly
in control…its what happens when you have one party
control regardless of party…its also what happens
when you have an accidental governor who was never
elected and never will be
Pataki failed because, discarding principle, he sold out to the very same unions and big spenders who have lounged in the back of the Democratic limousine for decades. He was not elected to do that, and he and the Republican Party have paid the price. Even the disreputable Client #9 was elected specifically to effectuate change, reformation, and “honesty” in that political Sodom, Albany. We now have an affable idiot in the top seat and ineffectual, self-serving dilettantes in the legislature who, instead of following the few sane fiscal ideas that the Accidental Governor DOES occasionally have, actually DIRECT HIM. They are like profligate children on a big allowance who nevertheless continuously succeed at bullying their hapless father. Many would be surprised at what kind of leadership even moderate Democrats would back if they had choices, realize what is happening to their State, and a modicum of insight into what is really going on. And, as for “sitting at my computer and dishing out baloney all day long,” please be aware of the fact that I am well paid to “sit at my computer all day long, dishing out baloney.” This blog I contribute to as a public service.
excellent analysis ed..we are completely devoid of
fiscally responsible leadership in this state and
have been for years..its just one big race to
see who can give the most away to the biggest
constituencies in an effort to get re elected
it has nothing to do with government
The Unions and Shelly Silver – the two biggest boogiemen are not your “problem”, my Republican friends.
The “problem” for you is the block upon block upon block of apartment buildings filled with voters in NYC, from the Bronx to Manhattan to Queens to Brooklyn, who pull the Democratic lever, no matter who is on the ballot for the Assembly, and almost no matter who is running statewide. See Hevesi vs. Callaghan, 2006. These folks give NYS politics almost 60 Assembly members who truly want to tax the rich, not are led by Silver and the Unions. Their voters, in majority number, resent Westchester-Nassau-Rockland folk for leaving the City and its problems. They don’t care how you close the MTA gap with a payroll tax – they don’t want a $3 fare. Silver rides the crest of that wave, and if he left tomorrow, his successor would as well. By the way, if Silver did leave tomorrow, who do you think would replace him? Another NYC Democrat..or ,maybe Richard Brodsky. Feel better???
I laugh when I hear, or read people say “throw ‘em all out”. Well you can through out your Westchester Assembly members, but you can’t vote out Central Brooklyn’s or the Upper West Side’s, or the Upper East Side’s, or Riverdale’s, or Kew Garden’s…or for that matter the urban Assembly folk from inner city districts in Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, Hempstead or Mt. Vernon. They are the permanent majority of the Assembly come hell or high water. P.S. As for unions, SEIU 1199 isn’t getting their way much these days, are they? CSEA power is overrated. The only monster is Teachers.
The truly excellent analysis is this: all the complaining about higher property taxes in the suburbs, and the lack of support for upstate, does not generate a majority of votes on Primary Day. Primary Day determines which Democrat will win.
Republicans win statewide only in unusual circumstances: Fed up with Cuomo I – 1994; Jack Javits splits the progressive vote – 1980. Not because they’re not good candidates, but because it’s a Democratic state.
Donkey that I am, I’d like to see Republicans be competitive choices, because it keeps the worst elements of the Democratic Party at bay. But you can’t have a war over how to keep your 37% of the base intact with how conservative you want your message to be. You need to do better in NYC, and the suburbs.
rudy won as a republican..bloomberg won as a republican
pataki won as a republican…all moderate and pro choice
does that tell you anything
