Paterson To State Workers: Layoffs Begin July 1
Gov. David Paterson this afternoon sent a letter to all state employees informing them that he will move forward with reducing the state workforce by nearly 9,000 people starting July 1.
He said he is forced to take the steps because he can’t get concessions from unions, imploring workers to reach to their unions to avoid the layoffs.
“I do not want to see anyone lose their job, particularly in this economic climate. But the savings from this workforce reduction plan is part of the budget I enacted with the Legislature, and in the absence of equivalent workforce savings, we cannot eliminate our state’s deficit without layoffs,” he wrote.
Here’s the letter:

Layoffs, more people on the overburdoned unemployment, more homes into foreclosure, more people on public assistance. Will it cost the state more in helping these people survive than salaries when they are laid off?
One simple solution is for the State to stop hiring for a long while, attrit, and get this 200,000 person gluttonous, patronage-filled state payroll down to a reasonable number.
How about all the freebies our Albany lawmakers get? Health Insurance, Dental, Retirement credit and travel, meals and room reimbursement ! They cant balance a budget but we continue to pay them ALL YEAR LONG for working less than six months, three days a week ! How about they give up some of the $$ to save the state money? They certainly do not earn their money anyway !
The hoi- polloi of government never take a vacation because they find ways to attend all these phony “conferences” all the way from Westchester or Albany to places like Vegas, Hawaii, Scotland, etc. Not only do they charge the air fare, hotels, cocktails, and meals to us, they build up vacation time that they “never use” so they can cash in again at the end. Same with sick time. If they are sick and don’t show up, no one records it. It’s just another payday.
