Same-Sex Marriage Opponents Mobilizing

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Apr 15, 2009

Despite the expectations that a bill by Gov. David Paterson to legalize same-sex marriage will lead to its passage, critics are already mobilizing against it.

The state Conservative Party said in a statement this morning that “Paterson, finding it difficult to raise money for a planned 2010 campaign, is seeking to gain the favor of those who support same-sex marriage.  One only has to look at campaign filings to understand that proponents of same-sex marriage are willing to open their wallets wide to those who support their deliberate attack on the sanctity of marriage.”

Meanwhile, Sen. Ruben Diaz, D-Bronx, one of the Senate Democrats opposed to same-sex marriage, said he’s holding a meeting of the NY Hispanic Clergy Organization to discuss their next steps.

“This  meeting  is  being  called  to inform ministers  of  Governor  Paterson’s  plans, the possibilities that marriage between  men  and  men and women with women is approved or not, the options that we Hispanics, Catholics, Evangelicals and others have to prevent it, and what we have to do,” he said.

Diaz said Paterson is  “also being disrespectful to the new Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan and to every Catholic in New York City by pushing a gay  marriage  bill  the same week that Catholics are celebrating  welcoming  ceremonies for his arrival;  If  I were Governor Paterson,  I would abstain from going to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the welcoming ceremony and to celebrate Mass.”

Paterson is attending Dolan’s installation as archbishop today at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Whatever it takes, I encourage the state senate Republicans and conservative Dems to oppose this bill. It is wrong and if they feel so strongly about it, put it the people for a vote. To Senator Diaz, I would like to offer my encouragement for his principled stand.

”. . .deliberate attack on the sanctity of marriage.”

If anybody is launching a deliberate attack, it’s conservatives. They are launching a deliberate attack on gays and lesbians – who have done nothing to warrant such an attack.

Fear is a powerful political tool and the quote above is designed to instill fear. But fear of what?

OK – now for the impending gay bashing. . .

I think this is not even an issue. There is nothing wrong with people wanting to enter into a union who are in love. There are so many more important issues this country is facing, this is not one of them.

Rob’t E. Lee would take exception.

The ‘sanctity of marriage’ was irrevocably severed (pun intended) by that HENRY in England many years ago. Whether GAYS,HOMOSEXUALS,SAPPHISTS, LESBIANS, TRANSGENDERS,or even TROGLODYTES have the ‘right’ to marry – is a function of the state’s they reside in – not under the aegis of organized or disorganized religion. While i may sympathize with CATHOLICS, ORTHODOX JEWS, those of the ANGLICAN faith, MUSLIMS – the entitlements/benefits and headaches/heartaches of marriage should be allowed to all.
